No Plans for DLC in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
Kojima Productions has officially stated that it does not intend to release episodic downloadable content (DLC) for the upcoming title, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Hideo Kojima himself believes that the trend for episodic expansions has waned and is no longer a viable model for contemporary gaming.
Kojima’s Insights on Potential Future Content
During the recent episode of his KOJI10 radio show, as highlighted by various sources including a report on X from NV, Kojima shared his perspective on the subject of paid expansions following the launch. At present, there are no intentions to introduce such content; however, he did mention the possibility that this stance could evolve over time. For now, the studio is focused on post-launch support, which will include essential bug fixes and enhancements. There is a hint that they may consider introducing features absent in the first game.
Discussing Cut Features and Development Changes
In the course of the discussion, Kojima revealed that Death Stranding 2: On the Beach initially included a unique hair system. This functionality would allow the character Sam to manage his hair and beard, with growth over time and the ability for players to customize their appearance via a mirror interface. Ultimately, this feature was discarded as the development team decided that Sam should not merely serve as a customizable avatar.
Shifts in Narrative Direction Due to the Pandemic
Kojima also elaborated on how the narrative of the game evolved due to the global COVID-19 crisis. Originally, the concept was to produce a 1.5 expansion focused on exploring alternate continents in a world where air travel was impossible. As the relevance of DLC diminished, this idea was abandoned, leading to the creation of a full sequel. Nevertheless, the original story’s opening remained intact, initially envisioned as a post-credits scene for Death Stranding Director’s Cut to connect the two entries in the series.
