As children, many of us dreamt of encountering a unicorn—an enchanting creature adorned with a shimmering rainbow mane and a horn capable of granting wishes. However, A24’s latest trailer for Death of a Unicorn redefines this childhood fantasy.
Accidental Encounter with a Unicorn
Imagine this scenario: you’re in the car with your father, played by Paul Rudd, while you take on the role of Jenna Ortega. Suddenly, the car is jolted as it strikes something, leading to a chaotic spin. To your shock, you realize you’ve accidentally killed a unicorn. Instead of leaving the mystical being behind, you decide to take it along for the ride. This twist of fate draws the attention of a wealthy billionaire, portrayed by Richard E. Grant, who sees potential in exploiting the creature for its scientific properties. This, in essence, is the premise of Death of a Unicorn.
The Enigmatic Cast
The ensemble cast also includes notable actors Will Poulter and Téa Leoni. One of the standout moments teased is Poulter encountering a unicorn while dressed in swim trunks—a scene that promises to be memorable when the film hits theaters in 2025.
A Nightmarish Revelation
Contrary to the kindly image of unicorns, the trailer presents a darker interpretation of these fabled creatures, raising the unsettling question: What if unicorns aren’t as benevolent as we’ve been led to believe? Traditionally, unicorns have been depicted as magical and uplifting beings. Yet, this new portrayal suggests that if exploited, these creatures could retaliate fiercely. The trailer cleverly touches on the exploitative nature of humanity, particularly towards entities possessing miraculous healing abilities. Unquestionably, this theme resonates in contemporary society, where the quest for profit can lead to ethical dilemmas.
Unicorns: No Longer Our Harmless Friends
The narrative takes a sharp turn into cautionary territory. In much-loved media, such as the Harry Potter series, a common belief is that harming a unicorn comes with severe repercussions, primarily due to their rarity and sanctity. In Death of a Unicorn, the consequences extend beyond mere social ostracism, with the slain unicorn’s companions potentially seeking revenge on the perpetrators. One can’t help but wonder: was it worth the potential cure for cancer if it involves invoking the wrath of a unicorn?
Anticipating the Film’s Release
While the trailer leaves us hanging with just a glimpse of what a unicorn’s horn can accomplish, the absurdity of a father-daughter road trip spiraling into such chaos is undeniably amusing. I find it hard to believe Paul Rudd would actually harm a unicorn; however, the character of Richard E. Grant may be a different story! And let’s not forget, the film assures us that no unicorns were harmed during its production—at least, I hope not!
As we await the release of Death of a Unicorn, we are reminded that if faced with such a situation, it’s crucial to remember the moral—using a unicorn’s rare properties for selfish gain is not the path we should take. Right? Here’s hoping we all take that lesson to heart!
