DC’s Humorous Take on Heroes: One Character Set to Haunt My Nightmares

Warning: This article contains spoilers for DC Horror Presents… #4!

DC Comics boasts an impressive array of superheroes, with an expansive roster that arguably surpasses any other comic publisher. However, not all characters are imbued with amazing or extraordinary abilities. Among these heroes is the Legion of Super-Heroes, a 31st-century team featuring a host of powerful individuals including a descendant of Brainiac, Saturn Girl, and Lightning Lad. Yet, perhaps the most unconventional member is Matter-Eater Lad. After reading the second story in DC Horror Presents… #4, written by Steve Kostanski, with art by Brendan Hay and Logan Faerber, my perspective on his powers has undergone a significant transformation.

Being a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes is often fraught with challenges. This group of young heroes is charged with tackling cosmic threats and has a history of time travel, even once recruiting a young Superman. Recently, DC has delved into the darker aspects of this team’s narratives, uncovering their potential for horror.

Matter-Eater Lad hails from the planet Bismoll and possesses the unique ability of superhuman digestion. True to his name, he can consume all forms of matter—solids, liquids, and gases alike. Remarkably, he finds even bizarre items like ray-guns and iron chains delicious, and he can eat at super-speed. While he cannot perform other activities at this speed, he continuously accelerates his consumption until all nearby matter is devoured.

Initially, I found Matter-Eater Lad’s powers to be humorous rather than menacing. His abilities seemed primarily utilitarian, as he often consumed obstacles to assist the Legion in their missions. However, the narrative in this issue unveiled a more disturbing reality: his role includes disposing of contraband and, shockingly, even corpses. He boasts of once devouring seven years’ worth of shipping receipts, but the job that truly unsettles is that he was tasked with consuming the body of a condemned criminal.

I Won’t Be Able to Sleep for Weeks…

Despite his reservations about consuming the corpse, Matter-Eater Lad’s reluctance becomes moot when the criminal resurrects, triggering a zombie infection aboard the space station. Faced with this terrifying outbreak, Matter-Eater Lad launches into a frantic eating spree, rapidly consuming every infected individual within moments.

This narrative pivot redefines Matter-Eater Lad from a mere comic relief character into a central figure of horror. As a child, I remembered him performing outlandish feats like swallowing entire planes; however, now the image of him devouring countless zombies in mere seconds haunts me. At one point, when a character realizes they are infected, they plead with Matter-Eater Lad to consume them before they can transform—a dark and unexpected twist to the narrative.

Why Couldn’t Matter-Eater Lad Have Stuck to Eating Planes?

While Superman can deliver lethal precision with his heat vision, and Spider-Man has shown a dark side, it is surprisingly Matter-Eater Lad who emerges as a genuinely terrifying character in the DC Universe. Despite his horrifying display of power, he ultimately fulfills his role as a hero by preventing a zombie outbreak, indulging in a gruesome meal that saves lives. The villain, a grotesque, gooey alien, only adds to the grim spectacle as Matter-Eater Lad leaves behind trails of red as he consumes the infected. While iconic villains like Joker or Doomsday evoke fear, my biggest dread now lies with the seemingly harmless Matter-Eater Lad.
