Insights from Dean Hall of RocketWerkz

In a recent interview regarding his studio’s survival game, ICARUS, I sought insights into Dean Hall’s views on AI’s role in gaming. He compared the current concerns surrounding AI to the initial reactions of adults to the advent of Google and Wikipedia in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Hall emphasized that AI is a permanent fixture, stating: “It’s really about how we deal with its impact.”At RocketWerkz, the team prioritizes handcrafted development for ICARUS, indicating they haven’t integrated AI significantly into the project yet. However, Hall noted that they utilize AI as a supplementary coding tool for other initiatives.

Hall further expressed their commitment to a meticulous development process, saying they prefer to sketch maps manually and bring them to life through dedicated craftsmanship. He acknowledged that their head of world-building, with experience from Bethesda, is particularly passionate about this hands-on approach. While they occasionally use AI for coding assistance—feeding it their codebase to allow for streamlined queries—Hall remarked that the technology is not yet ready for more substantial tasks in gaming.
