Daymond John Discusses “The American Dream” and Shark Tank’s Enduring Appeal

The latest season of Shark Tank made its debut on October 18, 2024, thrilling fans of reality television. The program provides budding entrepreneurs the opportunity to present their innovative concepts to a panel of investors—referred to as the Sharks—in hopes of obtaining financial support. First introduced on August 9, 2009, as the American adaptation of the British series Dragon’s Den, Shark Tank has showcased a diverse array of products, experiencing various degrees of market success.

Daymond John, an entrepreneur and one of the prominent Sharks, shared insights about the show’s broad appeal to American audiences during a conversation with Variety on October 24, 2024.

“One universal truth unites us as Americans: it’s the pursuit of the American Dream. When you step onto that carpet, it doesn’t factor in your background, race, gender, or beliefs. What matters is your willingness to rise before dawn and work late into the night,” Daymond remarked.

Shark Tank has even inspired successful international versions in various countries, all adhering to the same basic premise.

Daymond John Shares Appreciation for Mark Cuban Following His Exit

Mark Cuban recently revealed his decision to leave Shark Tank after the sixteenth season. Cuban, who joined in season 2 in 2011, has been a constant presence on the show since. Daymond took a moment to reflect on Cuban’s impact and expressed his gratitude for Cuban’s decade-long commitment to the show and its success.

Daymond expressed confidence in the show’s future, asserting that Shark Tank will endure regardless of the departures of any Sharks, including Mark, Barbara, or himself. He backed this optimism with the show’s Emmy win for Outstanding Structured Reality Program in 2024, emphasizing that the true essence of the show lies not in the Sharks, but in the aspiring entrepreneurs who come to realize their ambitions.

“To be frank, the focus shouldn’t be on the sharks. It’s truly about the everyday individuals, the mom-and-pop teams who have put everything on the line for a single chance,”Daymond commented.

He added:

“It’s about that young boy, who perhaps struggles with dyslexia, just like I once did, never envisioning a successful future… who creates an idea and decides, ‘I’m going to forge a community I cherish, and I am going to uplift that community.’”

In his discussion with the publication, Daymond also shed light on the upcoming fifth annual Black Entrepreneurs Day, an event dedicated to celebrating and recognizing Black entrepreneurs and their businesses. This year’s event is scheduled for November 22 at Atlanta’s Fox Theater.

The Black Entrepreneurs Day initiative has distributed over $1 million in grants to more than 40 Black-owned businesses to date. This year alone, it has allocated $100,000 in grants sponsored by Hilton, JPMorgan Chase, Constant Contact, and T-Mobile for Business, with the grant application deadline set for November 1.

Daymond recounted that the inception of Black Entrepreneurs Day in 2020 stemmed from a sense of collective frustration among the Black community, primarily ignited by the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of George Floyd’s tragic death. He observed a spectrum of responses—peaceful protests within moments of anger. This pivotal moment resonated with him, reminiscent of when he established FUBU in 1992, as he believed in prioritizing the construction of businesses rather than destruction.

This aspiration to foster a business community prompted Daymond to invite some friends to share their experiences, discussing both the challenges and victories in their paths to success. Past guests have included notable figures such as Spike Lee, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kevin Hart, with this year featuring stars like Kelly Rowland, Flavor Flav, Charlamagne tha God, Jordan Chiles, and more.

Don’t miss new episodes of Shark Tank airing on ABC every Friday at 8/7c.
