David Henrie Criticized for Shading Dan Benson During Interview After Recent Movie with MAGA Cast
David Henrie has faced online backlash following an interview in which he seemingly took a jab at fellow Wizards of Waverly Place actor Dan Benson. This incident arose after Benson posted on social media about being blocked by Henrie on X.
On October 30, David Henrie participated in a Buzzfeed Celeb segment titled The Cast of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Find Out Which Original Character They Are. In this playful quiz, the original cast including Janice LeAnn Brown, Mimi Gianopulos, Alkaio Thiele, Max Matenko, and Taylor Cora, explored which characters from the beloved Disney Channel series they resembled most.
During the discussion, David remarked:
“I can’t believe you put one of these people on here. Millennials understand that.”
This comment elicited nods from his co-stars. Laughter ensued when Henrie mentioned Benson’s character, Zeke Beakerman, while suggesting potential guest stars for the revival.
The mention of Benson apparently ruffled some feathers, as Henrie appeared to throw shade regarding Benson’s pivot to an adult entertainment career after his days on the show. This segment quickly gained traction, with many fans criticizing Henrie’s behavior.
One person on X shared their thoughts:
“David Henrie is super religious and he was just in a movie with a bunch of MAGA folks, so what do you expect?”
This comment alluded to Henrie’s recent film, Reagan, which sparked controversy. Critics from Rotten Tomatoes described it as a “cloying and glossy rendering of history”while the Los Angeles Times criticized it for presenting a shallow view tailored to religious conservatives.
Other users joined the chorus of criticism directed at David Henrie.
“He’s the reason the reboot will get canceled,” an X user said.
“He wanted to be messy so… Dan responding is not exactly out of pocket,” another platform user remarked.
Following this, Dan Benson took to X, candidly expressing his feelings about the situation: “David Henrie can suck my d**k. I’ll pay him more than they paid me for Wizards I promise you that.” Other reactions included:
“Grade A loser,” a user stated.
“I’d rather be on OF than starring in some Ronald Reagan biopic with Dennis Quaid that has 18% on Rotten Tomatoes,” commented another.
At the time of this article’s publication, Henrie had not publicly addressed the criticism. Additional comments included:
“I didn’t know David Henrie was rude and judgey like that. He could have just not said anything and avoided embarrassing Dan. Bad look,” an X user expressed.
“Magic can’t disguise the shade,” another user pointed out.
Dan Benson’s Social Media Response to Henrie Blocking Him
That same day, Dan Benson shared a screenshot on Instagram showcasing that he had been blocked by Henrie on X. He humorously pretended to tear up over the situation, captioning the post:
“We pretend to be best friends for years. How could you do this to me??”
Benson had previously expressed his disappointment about not being invited to partake in the reboot, speculating that it was due to his current involvement in the adult entertainment sector. In a TMZ interview, he commented:
“I think it’s super exciting that the fans get to kind of relive their childhood again, and the old characters that they used to love watching are coming back… The other side of me is very sad because I know for a fact that I will definitely not be a part of it. That’s all on me. I totally get it. I made choices.”
He further explained that he found himself in the adult industry following the leakage of explicit photos, stating in a TikTok video that he “tripped and fell” into this line of work. Despite the trauma related to the incident, he made the choice to embrace it and began selling his photos online, marking the start of a new chapter in his career.
The first two episodes of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place premiered on Disney Channel on October 29 and are available for streaming on Disney+. New episodes are scheduled for release every Tuesday.
