Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1!
Fans of the Star Wars saga often draw parallels between Darth Vader and Kylo Ren. Both figures were trained in the dark side by Darth Sidious and wielded considerable power over their Empires. Notably, Kylo Ren is the grandson of Darth Vader, accentuating their bloodline connection. Despite these similarities, a crucial distinction separates the two characters.
A New Era in Star Wars Comics
The Star Wars universe is on the brink of a new chapter, particularly within Marvel’s canon comics. The upcoming flagship series will be set in the aftermath of Return of the Jedi. However, a particularly engaging series titled Star Wars: Legacy of Vader will take place between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, centering on Kylo Ren as he delves into the enigmatic past of Darth Vader.

Readers can anticipate stunning art from talented artists such as Derrick Chew, Annie Wu, Erik M. Gist, John Giang, and Ramón Rosanas, featured in Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1, which is set to launch on February 5, 2025.
Insights from the Writers
The creative minds behind this revived era include Charles Soule, Marc Guggenheim, and Alex Segura. They discussed their vision and the forthcoming titles on the YouTube channel Star Wars Explained.
The Emotional Dynamics: Vader vs. Kylo Ren
During the interview, Charles Soule highlighted a fundamental distinction between Darth Vader and Kylo Ren:
Charles Soule: The way both Vader and Kylo present themselves to the galaxy, to the public, is very untouchable – unflappable – reserved. The difference between Vader and Kylo is that Vader did that because he successfully destroyed his emotions in many ways and he felt almost nothing until he understood that Luke existed. Kylo is still feeling all of it, he is very much in his feels I believe even though he’s pretending he’s not.
As Soule noted, Darth Vader has achieved emotional numbness, allowing hatred to fuel his dark power. In stark contrast, Kylo Ren is deeply attuned to his feelings, driven predominantly by anger. Although he attempts to present himself similarly to Vader, this is merely a disguise. The moral weight of his actions burdens Kylo profoundly, leading to feelings of shame that further entrench him in darkness.
Redemption Narratives: Divergent Paths
The contrasting emotional landscapes of these two characters illuminate their paths to redemption. Darth Vader’s awakening came through the love he had for his son, Luke, which ultimately led him to sacrifice himself for Luke’s safety. Conversely, Kylo Ren’s redemption was catalyzed by Rey and the memories of his father, Han Solo. It was about embracing his feelings rather than suppressing them, recognizing that his emotional depth could be a source of strength rather than shame.
Charles Soule’s keen grasp of these intricate character dynamics bodes well for the future of the Star Wars narrative. Fans have much to look forward to as these storylines unfold.
