Daredevil: Born Again Showrunner Discusses “Much Darker” Tone in MCU Series: “This Is As Far As A Disney Plus Show Has Ever Gone”

Matt Murdock is set to make a highly anticipated return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with his new series, Daredevil: Born Again. As confirmed by the showrunner, this installment promises to be one of the darkest offerings from Marvel Studios to date. With the inclusion of the Marvel-Netflix series into the MCU canon, Phase 5 is preparing to revisit a significant chapter in the franchise’s evolution.

In recent discussions, Dario Scardapane, the showrunner for Daredevil: Born Again, highlighted that this series aims to elevate the gritty storytelling that fans have come to expect. As Scardapane noted in an interview with SFX magazine (via GamesRadar), the show will push creative boundaries in ways that may even outshine other Disney+ projects:

Dario Scardapane: It’s really strange. You work in a vacuum and then something else comes out and you go, ‘Oh, wow’.I would say in many ways The Penguin is our direct competition. However, we’re even more grounded, even less stylized, even more rooted in the here and now. I loved Penguin. We’re a little faster, meaner, cleaner in our storytelling… It has a pace and a scope that, for a lot of reasons, Netflix wasn’t able to do. They were very dark cinematically, not necessarily story-wise, although there were some dark elements. We’re much darker. This is as far as a Disney Plus show has ever gone.

Implications of Scardapane’s Comments for Daredevil: Born Again

Scardapane’s remarks suggest that the upcoming series will delve deeper into themes and narratives that were previously constrained during the original Netflix run. Although the earlier series was notable for its violence and mature themes, it was still in the nascent stages of the MCU, which was developing its overall identity.

Since the conclusion of Daredevil Season 3, the MCU has undergone significant transformations, both in its story arcs and thematic depth. While many of the Disney+ entries have maintained a balanced tone, recent ventures like Echo have revealed Marvel Studios’ willingness to explore darker, more grounded stories. This trend sets a promising foundation for Daredevil: Born Again.

If Daredevil: Born Again resonates with audiences, it could pave the way for a new wave of more serious and complex MCU offerings on Disney+.This would not only expand the narrative landscape of the franchise but also provide a richer viewing experience for dedicated fans.
