Daredevil: Born Again is set to carve out its own identity within the Marvel universe, according to showrunner Dario Scardapane. However, his recent remarks have sparked concern among fans, who fear that the series may lose the essence of what made the original Netflix iteration so acclaimed.
Filming for Daredevil: Born Again commenced with loose connections to its predecessor, which aired for three successful seasons before its cancellation. Marvel Studios aimed to avoid the pitfalls of the prior series and thus decided on a fresh direction. Significant changes were made during the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, allowing Marvel executives to reevaluate footage and conclude that a substantial creative overhaul was necessary. This involved rewriting scenes and crafting new episodes while integrating some existing footage, with Scardapane stepping in as showrunner.
In an interview with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar), Scardapane articulated his vision for Daredevil: Born Again, highlighting a preference for engaging character interactions over introspective dialogues. He pointed out that while the original show had its moments of brilliance, it sometimes fell into tedious discussions about heroism, which he believes have been overdone.“I didn’t want to hear characters lamenting about their situations; I wanted to see them take action, ”he stated.

Imagine watching season 3 of daredevil and then go on to describe the show as being too “self-indulgent” while it’s showing one of the best portrayals of depression in the superhero genre https://t.co/ofeOZM9w5U pic.twitter.com/fVPphlFLJb — Yen 🤟ðŸ́»DDBA HYPE (@Murdocklorian) January 26, 2025
Scardapane further explained that during his time working on Netflix’s The Punisher, the directive was to include lengthy character dialogues to create space between action sequences. With the new series, however, he believes they can deliver dynamic action scenes at a much faster pace. He characterized the original series as noir-inspired, whereas Daredevil: Born Again is being crafted as a gritty New York crime story that reflects elements reminiscent of acclaimed series like The Sopranos and King of New York.“It carries a pace and scope that Netflix couldn’t achieve, given their stylistic limitations. This time, we are embracing a darker aesthetic, ”he concluded.
Scardapane’s evaluation of Netflix’s Daredevil has not resonated well with fans, with many taking to Twitter to express their disappointment. They argued against his characterization of dialogue-driven scenes as the series’ “worst”moments, citing the third season’s episode “New York’s Finest”as an exemplary showcase of compelling storytelling that focused on a heated debate between Daredevil and The Punisher about their diverging approaches to justice. Concerns have arisen that the creative team behind Daredevil: Born Again might overlook the intimate character moments in favor of action-packed sequences.
Indeed, the Netflix series was lauded not only for its thrilling fight scenes but also for its powerful character interactions. While action is crucial, fans fear that if the new series prioritizes violence over storytelling, it could undermine the depth that made the original show a success.
Daredevil: Born Again is slated to premiere on March 4, 2025, exclusively on Disney Plus.
