- Speculation is rife about Jenna Ortega potentially stepping into the role of White Tiger in the MCU.
The title Daredevil: Born Again hints at a revitalization of the iconic hero, Matt Murdock. Following Charlie Cox’s much-anticipated return to the MCU in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Daredevil has made notable appearances in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Echo. Now, he is set to take center stage once more in Daredevil: Born Again, slated for release in 2025.
Fans were treated to an exhilarating trailer unveiling a darker, grittier tone for this new series, which was first glimpsed at Disney’s presentation in May 2024. In addition to the eagerly awaited returns of Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin and Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, the series introduces Kamar de los Reyes as Hector Ayala, the new White Tiger. This leads to the question: who is White Tiger, and what significance does he hold for the MCU?
The Legacy of White Tiger in Marvel Comics

White Tiger made his initial appearance in the 1975 issue of Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #19. Throughout the years, several characters have donned the White Tiger mantle, with each iteration contributing to a complex legacy. Hector Ayala, one of the most recognized versions, derived his powers from three Jade Tiger amulets procured from K’un-Lun—the mystical city featured prominently in Iron Fist lore. Endowed with superhuman abilities, Ayala initially struggled with the dependence on his powers and attempted to distance himself from the White Tiger identity.
Despite stepping away from his heroics, circumstances drew Ayala back into conflict when he faced false murder charges. In a twist of fate, he enlisted Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, as his lawyer to clear his name. Tragically, just before evidence surfaced to prove his innocence, Ayala was fatally shot by security forces in Daredevil Vol. 2 #58.
The character of White Tiger has seen various interpretations since then. For instance, the second incarnation appeared in Heroes for Hire #1 in 1997, this version being a white Bengal tigress fused with a female warrior’s spirit. We also have Kevin “Kasper”Cole, the third White Tiger, known for his connection to the Black Panther lore, who utilized a synthetic variant of the heart-shaped herb in his own narrative.
Notably, Angela del Toro, Hector’s niece, inherited the Jade Tiger amulet following his demise. Trained by Murdock, she took on the White Tiger persona but met a tragic end at the hands of Lady Bullseye, later revived as an assassin for the Hand, drawing parallels to Elektra Natchios’s backstory.
Finally, the fifth White Tiger, Ava Ayala, emerged in 2011’s Avengers Academy #20; she is Hector’s younger sister and Angela’s aunt. Ava’s journey includes teaming up with the Heroes for Hire and later joining the Mighty Avengers. Due to her connections with significant story arcs like the 2015 Secret Wars, she remains a potential candidate for future MCU appearances, despite Hector’s introduction in Daredevil: Born Again.
White Tiger’s Role and Future in the MCU

As a historical figure in comic lore, Hector Ayala holds the distinction of being the first Latin American superhero within the Marvel universe, paving the way for representation in mainstream comics, especially alongside other prominent Latin American characters like Tenoch Huerta’s Namor and Zoe Saldaña’s Gamora.
The unexpected death of Kamar de los Reyes at the close of 2023 raises questions about the future of the White Tiger character. Until the premiere of Daredevil: Born Again, the trajectory of White Tiger’s narrative within the MCU remains a mystery. The studio may opt for a recast similar to what is speculated with Ray Stevenson’s character in Ahsoka, or they might transition to another character from the legacy of White Tiger to continue the story.
Given White Tiger’s essential role in the comics, it’s evident that the MCU has merely begun to explore this character’s potential, especially with the formation of a new Avengers lineup, including potential inclusions from Young Avengers, X-Men, and Thunderbolts. If the Defendersverse reawakens, any iteration of White Tiger could find a place on a reassembled Heroes for Hire team.

Moreover, circulating rumors hint at the possibility of Jenna Ortega, known for her role in Wednesday, joining the MCU as White Tiger. Ortega previously appeared in Iron Man 3 as a minor character and is now a fan favorite for a more significant role. There is speculation that she could portray Angela del Toro, which would align with Hector’s story arc. However, there has been no official announcement regarding her casting, although it is possible she could emerge as a surprise in Daredevil: Born Again.
White Tiger’s inclusion in the MCU has been anticipated for quite some time. A subtle nod to Angela del Toro was made in Jessica Jones, where Jessica (Krysten Ritter) referenced her as an exceptional private investigator. Although this plotline didn’t materialize further, with Daredevil: Born Again reaffirmed as a continuation of the Netflix series, it’s likely that characters like Jessica Jones will also remain intertwined within the MCU’s broader narrative, establishing a platform for White Tiger’s crucial role as an ally to Daredevil, particularly in a storyline echoing the Devil’s Reign comics where vigilantes face oppression under Kingpin’s regime.
