Insights from Danny Amendola and Witney Carson on their viral dance moment
The iconic movement that inspired countless TikTok imitations featured a contemporary dance style set to Unsteady by X Ambassadors and the Erich Lee Gravity Remix.
Witney Carson, a professional dancer on Dancing With the Stars since season 18, choreographed the routine, marking her 14th season during the current round, season 33.
Witney expressed:
“That leg move was very unique and special to Danny and I, and we just, we had no idea”.
Both expressed their astonishment at the move’s popularity, with Amendola admitting he initially thought it was just a glitch in his feed. Their performance garnered them the highest scores of the night.
This remarkable sequence took place in Week 5 of the current Dancing With the Stars season during the Dedication Night theme.
On Good Morning America, their fellow contestants, rugby player Ilona Maher and professional dancer Alan Bernsten, humorously attempted the move.
Co-hosts Ginger Zee and Sam Champion, along with Michael Strahan, joined in on the fun, attempting the viral dance as well.
Despite their experience on Dancing With the Stars, Ginger and Sam found the move challenging. After trying it, Zee humorously commented:
“You guys, we need like a week!”
This viral TikTok trend now comes with a cautionary note about the potential risks it poses to participants and those around them. Amendola offered insight into the execution, mentioning that keeping the partner balanced while lifting was the most challenging aspect for the male, while the female needed to maintain a straight bottom leg.
Danny Amendola encouraged those eager to try the move to first view their instructional video available on TikTok. He noted:
“It’s on our TikTok. So, if you do want to try it, you should go look at the tutorial and just really know the proper things before you try it”.
In the tutorial, Witney emphasized the importance of the women’s bottom leg being straight for better balance, alongside arching their backs to enhance stability. Amendola added that the woman’s foot should rest on the man’s foot for proper grounding during the lift.
