“Daniil Medvedev is great at stroking his invisible moustache; Nick Kyrgios was himself on the court” – Jason Isaacs on tennis’ ‘biggest villains’
‘John Isaacs, known for his role in ‘Harry Potter’, has recently shared his admiration for Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios’ ability to captivate tennis fans through their unique personalities.’
Isaacs, a British actor, gained recognition for his portrayals of villains in the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise and the historical drama ‘The Patriot.’ At the age of 60, he was recently invited to appear on Tennis Channel due to his passion for the sport.
Steve Weissman, the host, posed an intriguing question to Jason Isaac, who is well-known for his antagonistic roles. He asked which present-day tennis player Isaacs sees as the “biggest villain.”In reply, Isaacs confidently named Daniil Medvedev, praising his ability to portray the perfect pantomime villain.
“I like the way Daniil Medvedev liked playing the villain. He’s got a tremendous sense of humor. He’s great at interacting with the crowd. He’s great at stroking his invisible moustache. He’s a great character to watch.”
The Brit added Nick Kyrgios to the mix, emphasizing that his genuineness was a key characteristic for the younger generation.
“The biggest draw in tennis for a long time was Nick Kyrgios, who was nowhere near the top 10 in the world but he’s the one everybody under 30 wanted to watch. And why? Because he was himself on the court. So, I don’t know who the biggest villain in tennis is right now. But I hope we can see more of him.”
Nick Kyrgios: “The Next Generation’s Fan Favorite”
Despite facing criticism from both fellow players and supporters, Nick Kyrgios remains one of the most controversial figures in tennis. Despite this, he has also acknowledged that his actions have attracted a significant number of new fans to the sport.
“I’ve been one of the FEW PLAYERS that have brought million more fans to the sport and have made more money for everyone,”Kyrgios said on his X (formerly Twitter) account last December.
The 28-year-old was also delighted by the recognition he received from younger fans during an Instagram Q&A last year.
“Crazy, the love I receive from younger generation is insane. I just want all the youngins out there to keep chasing their dreams,”he wrote on his Instagram stories last April.
After recovering from wrist and knee injuries, Kyrgios is back in playing shape based on his recent Instagram stories. He has been absent from Major tournaments since the 2022 US Open, but is expected to make a comeback in the near future.
