Danielle Fishel Shares Successful Breast Cancer Surgery Outcome Following Diagnosis Announcement
Danielle Fishel, the beloved actress, recently provided an encouraging health update following her earlier breast cancer diagnosis. At 43 years old, Fishel first disclosed on the August 19 episode of her Pod Meets World podcast that she had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer.
Specifically, she revealed that she has Ductal Carcinoma In Situ, a non-invasive type of breast cancer. During her podcast discussion, she described it as “technically stage zero”breast cancer and reassured her fans that she was “going to be fine.”Additionally, she mentioned plans to undergo surgery to eliminate the cancer.
On Tuesday, October 15, Danielle appeared on Today, where she shared a promising health update, stating:
“There is no evidence of disease, so the surgery was successful and got the cancer out of my body.”
Fishel underwent two lumpectomy surgeries to successfully remove the cancer. She chose this option over a double mastectomy for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, she indicated that she did not possess the genetic markers necessitating a double mastectomy. Secondly, she appreciated that lumpectomy offers a faster recovery period.
Danielle Fishel on Viewing Cancer as a “Journey”and Her Post-Surgery Recovery Strategy
During her segment on Today, Danielle Fishel, married to Jensen Karp, reflected on her experience with cancer and the successful procedures she had. She remarked:
“They call cancer a journey for a reason. It’s not just a walk in and have even one procedure and then you’re done.”
Fishel shared that she received her DCIS diagnosis on July 22 and began consulting with her medical team to develop an appropriate treatment strategy by the last week of July.
Expanding on her “journey,”she explained her ongoing treatment plan, which aims to prevent a recurrence of the cancer. Following her lumpectomy, she will begin hormone therapy and may require radiation therapy in the future.
The Boy Meets World alum emphasized that her health is continuously monitored, with regular mammograms scheduled every three to six months.
She may also need annual MRIs as part of her ongoing surveillance. Despite the challenges of her cancer journey, Fishel expresses gratitude for the early detection of her illness. She noted on the show:
“I was so lucky that I found my cancer so early because I went and had my annual mammogram on time. I was thinking, like, ‘Great. I caught it early. I can be done with this soon.’
However, she candidly acknowledged that “there really is no ‘done with it’”when it comes to cancer, which has turned into an “emotional and mental process”for her.
In the interview, Fishel also shared her motivation for proceeding with the lumpectomy, recognizing its brief recovery time because she had to return to work by August.
Having received her diagnosis on June 22, she began working on Lopez vs. Lopez by August 21, where she needed to direct five episodes of the show. To date, she has successfully directed three episodes, including one from the first season and two from the second season’s double-header airing on April 9.
The third season of Lopez vs. Lopez is set to premiere on October 18, showcasing more of Danielle Fishel’s directorial contributions.
