The movie is brought to life by producers Miri Yoon, Roy Lee, Raphael Margules, Sean Patrick O’Reilly, J. D. Lifshitz, and Paul Barbeau. It debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2024, and started streaming on Netflix on October 18, 2024.

Woman of the Hour marks the directorial debut of Anna Kendrick, who also portrays the lead role of Cheryl Bradshaw. The film centers around her encounter with the infamous serial killer Rodney Alcala during the filming of The Dating Game in 1978. Netflix describes the film with the following logline:

In Woman of the Hour, Daniel Zovatto takes on the role of the serial killer, Rodney Alcala. Alcala was infamously linked to the murders of over a hundred young women and girls across California and New York during the 1970s.

Woman of the Hour delves into the harrowing true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala and his numerous victims, whom he assaulted and murdered over a decade in the 1970s.

The narrative particularly focuses on Alcala’s shocking appearance on The Dating Game in September 1978, during a brutal killing spree in California. His audacity is most evident as he appeared on national television while being a fugitive.

During this pivotal episode, Rodney competed against two other suitors and ultimately charmed the bachelorette, Cheryl Bradshaw. However, sensing something was amiss, Cheryl decided to back out of the date, deeming him “really creepy.”Her intuition spared her from a potential tragedy that befell many others who encountered Alcala.

Following his TV appearance, Alcala continued his shocking spree for another year until he was captured in July 1979. His arrest and subsequent trial gained widespread attention, leading to his notoriety as The Dating Game Serial Killer.

Ultimately, he was convicted of seven murders and sentenced to death after a series of trials and appeals. It’s believed that his actual number of victims surpasses a hundred.

Rodney Alcala died in prison on July 24, 2021, at 77 years of age, from natural causes, following a life sentence.

Daniel Zovatto is an American actor with Costa Rican roots. His filmography includes notable titles such as Lady Bird, Beneath, It Follows, The Pope’s Exorcist, Don’t Breathe, and Laggies.

Zovatto’s television debut was as Seth Dormer in the series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back in 2014. He has held leading roles in Here and Now, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, and the post-apocalyptic series Station Eleven. He has also made appearances in recurring roles on shows such as Fear the Walking Dead, The Deleted, and Revenge.
