Dandadan has rapidly surged in popularity, establishing itself as one of 2024’s most beloved anime and manga series. The show captivates audiences with its charming characters, an entrancing world filled with peculiarities, and, notably, a distinctive power system. Crafted by Yukinobu Tatsu, the narrative explores the exhilarating conflict between aliens and spirits, or yokai. Many characters have been endowed with extraordinary abilities derived from these supernatural beings, contributing to the series’ depth and appeal.
Nearly half of the primary characters in Dandadan have engaged with spirits, allowing them to access remarkable transformations that enhance their spiritual capabilities. This power infusion has led to some astonishing displays of strength. However, fans are left pondering a pivotal question: who stands as the strongest spiritual fighter within the series to date?
5. Rin Sawaki
Wields the Powers of Mai Kawabanga / Onbusuman
- First Appearance: Chapter 54 (Manga)
Rin Sawaki may be a newer addition to Dandadan’s ensemble, but she has swiftly become a crucial team player. After overcoming the haunting presence of Onbusuman, which haunted her throughout her youth and was tied to her lost friend, Mai Kawabanga, Rin can now merge with her guardian spirit to unlock unique abilities.
As children, Rin and Mai dreamed of life as successful idols. This newfound spiritual transformation allows Rin to realize a fragment of that dream while also granting her the power to manipulate gravity. Her skills proved essential during the Danmanra Arc; however, her fighting prowess remains untested, which positions her as the least combat-capable member of the group at present.
4 Unji Zuma
Wields the Powers of Futa Zuma / Umbrella Boy
- First Appearance: Chapter 136 (Manga)
Unji Zuma, a delinquent with an unexpected compassionate side, gained his powers through the yokai known as Umbrella Boy, the spirit of his late brother, Futa. This transformation allows Zuma to summon formidable umbrellas, which he uses to engage in combat, hover in mid-air, and unleash devastating shockwaves.
While Unji was already adept in battle prior to receiving these abilities, mastering his umbrella techniques has significantly elevated his combat strength. Nevertheless, he faces limitations, requiring him to wield only two umbrellas at once—a fair trade-off for his otherwise formidable skills. Following an encounter with the Fairy-Tale-Card, Zuma’s abilities surged, hinting at the potential for more powerful transformations in the future.
3. Aira Shiratori
Wields the Powers of Acrobatic Silky
- First Appearance: Chapter 10 (Manga) / Episode 5 (Anime)
The conclusion of the Acrobatic Silky Arc is widely recognized as one of Dandadan’s most tragic and poignant moments. It reveals the sorrowful backstory of the titular yokai, who selflessly sacrifices herself to rescue Aira Shiratori. In a heartfelt gesture, Aira thanks Acrobatic Silky during her passing, unknowingly inheriting her remarkable abilities.
Aira’s transformation into Acrobatic Silky enhances her physical strength, speed, and agility. She possesses extraordinarily silky hair that she can use as tentacles in combat scenarios. Initially strong, Aira’s skills have intensified through rigorous training and intense battles against various alien foes, with her Pirouette Noble Drill serving as a particularly destructive move in her arsenal.
2. Jin Enjoji (Jiji)
Wields the Powers of Evil Eye
- First Appearance: Chapter 27 (Manga) / Episode 10 (Anime)
Jin Enjoji, often referred to as Jiji, stands out among the human characters in Dandadan due to the unique challenge he faces with his possessive spirit, Evil Eye. This powerful entity not only grants him extraordinary abilities but also takes complete control of his body, presenting a significant dilemma for Jiji and his allies.
Although this possession grants Jiji immense physical prowess, it poses a considerable threat to humanity. Luckily, with the help of Okarun, who distracts Evil Eye with a promise of confrontation, Jiji learns to utilize his remarkable ki reserves to perform devastating techniques. His special moves, such as the Ha Wave and Evil Gun, have proven to be crucial in the fight against formidable adversaries, illustrating Jiji’s latent potential should he ever master control over Evil Eye.
1. Ken Takakura (Okarun)
Wields the Powers of Turbo Granny
- First Appearance: Chapter 1 (Manga) / Episode 1 (Anime)
Unsurprisingly, the strongest human endowed with spiritual powers in Dandadan is one of the story’s main protagonists, Ken Takakura (also known as Okarun). Initially, Okarun finds himself possessed by the fierce spirit of Turbo Granny, enabling him to thwart the menacing Serpos threatening his friend, Momo Ayase. Following his confrontation with the yokai and the loss of his two “golden balls,”Okarun ultimately frees himself from Turbo Granny’s grasp while keeping her extraordinary powers.
The transformation into Turbo Granny greatly enhances Okarun’s strength, agility, and speed, significantly benefiting from his daily training regimen. His remarkable victories against powerful supernatural entities—such as Nessie, Evil Eye, and the Space Globalists—solidify his reputation as the most formidable human spiritual warrior in the Dandadan universe. While he has recently relinquished these powers back to Turbo Granny, her return is surely imminent, suggesting his continued prominence in the series.
