Each year in the film industry brings a fresh wave of new movies, and 2024 was no different. Despite the unpredictable nature of box office successes, film enthusiasts were treated to a diverse array of options, ranging from high-budget blockbusters to intriguing indie titles.
In total, I managed to watch 61 films in 2024, with a notable selection of new releases capturing my attention. Here, I present my list of the top 10 films that made a lasting impression this year, ensuring only to feature those that premiered in 2024, excluding films that had their wide release in 2024 but technically debuted in the previous year.
My Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2024
- Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
- My Old Ass
- Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
- Deadpool & Wolverine
- Heretic
- Terrifier 3
- Dune: Part Two
- The Wild Robot
- Wicked
- Anora
Among the remarkable films this year, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continues the legacy of its rebooted predecessors. Although it may not reach the sublime heights of earlier entries, it delivers exhilarating action, commendable performances from both human and ape characters, and an emotionally engaging narrative.
Another standout release was Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which didn’t disappoint with its jaw-dropping visuals and remarkable villain played by Chris Hemsworth. Equally enjoyable was Deadpool & Wolverine, which provided relentless entertainment and served as a fitting farewell to the Fox Marvel era. Meanwhile, Dune: Part Two captivated audiences with its stunning visual effects, making it a highlight of the sci-fi genre this year.
For horror aficionados, 2024 offered a wealth of options. Among the latest releases, Heretic and Terrifier 3 left a lasting impression. Heretic showcased stellar performances by Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. Meanwhile, Terrifier 3 defied expectations with its blend of over-the-top gore and dark humor, securing a spot on my list of favorite unconventional holiday movies, with Art the Clown poised as a horror icon.
Another film worth mentioning is My Old Ass, featuring Aubrey Plaza and Maisy Stella in a charming coming-of-age, time-bending narrative. Although the storyline trails some predictable paths, the rich character development offers a refreshing take on the genre. Fans of coming-of-age stories would also appreciate Didi, another gem from 2024, especially those who fondly recall the mid-2000s.
The leading trio of films that captured my heart in 2024 varies greatly. The Wild Robot is a touching animated feature centered on the friendship between a robot and forest animals; its emotional depth struck a chord with me. In contrast, Wicked, an adaptation of the beloved stage musical, continues to resonate, especially through its captivating soundtrack. Ultimately, Anora, directed by Sean Baker, topped my list as the year’s standout film. Mikey Madison’s portrayal of the titular character is nothing short of mesmerizing, and the film’s narrative is so engaging that its runtime feels fleeting. Anora features some of the most memorable and poignant cinematic moments of 2024, and I believe it has the potential to become a classic. I eagerly anticipate future films featuring Mikey Madison, counting the days until their release.
