Dallas mayor Eric Johnson urges Chiefs to return to Texas after Missouri voters reject stadium tax

According to NBCsports.com, Jackson County voters have rejected the Kansas City Chiefs’ proposal to fund their stadium renovation through a sales tax. As a result, the future of the team’s stadium remains uncertain.

The franchise aimed to renovate Arrowhead Stadium and proposed a sales tax to fund the project, which could have also benefitted the MLB’s Kansas City Royals in building a new stadium.

Despite the rejection of the bid, the future of Kansas City in Missouri remains uncertain. It is worth noting that owner Mark Donovan had suggested the possibility of the Chiefs relocating if the bid did not pass.

Fortunately, Mayor Eric Johnson of Texas has proposed a solution: relocating the franchise to Texas. Johnson announced on X:

“Welcome home, Dallas Texans!”

Donovan’s proposal to relocate the team is shrouded in uncertainty. The task of uprooting the team from Missouri and securing a new location for them would be a monumental undertaking.

Despite this, there have been instances of teams relocating successfully in the past. The St. Louis Rams and the San Diego Chargers, for example, moved to L.A. and proved that relocation can be a viable option.

Although fans may initially struggle to adjust to their team relocating to a different state, they will eventually embrace the change.

Despite the unsuccessful attempt to extend the sales tax, the Kansas City Chiefs may still remain in their current location. According to CBSsports.com, the team has a lease with Arrowhead that runs through 2031, ensuring that fans can continue to attend games at the stadium for the foreseeable future.

Following that, the prospects of the team’s future in Kansas City are uncertain. The previously planned $800 million renovation for Arrowhead Stadium was intended to bring it in line with other NFL stadiums, but it is currently unclear if any upgrades will still be implemented.

It does seem strange to imagine Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City playing in a different state, considering he has spent his entire career in the state. However, as we know from the nature of the NFL, anything is possible.

Despite the ample amount of time remaining to plan for the stadium renovations, it is crucial to come up with a plan soon as the Chiefs may potentially play their last season in Kansas City in 2031 if no action is taken.
