Dakota Johnson’s Role in The Social Network: Actress Shares First Impression of Justin Timberlake

Dakota Johnson recently reminisced about her experience working with Justin Timberlake on the set of The Social Network. In a video interview with Vanity Fair, published on Friday, September 27, Johnson revisited some of her earlier films, including her role alongside Timberlake.

When asked about any “preconceived ideas”she had about sharing screen time with the pop star, Johnson candidly responded:

“Are you kidding? I was just like 19 and straddling Justin Timberlake and like whipping him in the face with my hair. [I] 100% had preconceived notions but he was lovely and kind and really, you know, welcoming for a person that was just a stranger.”

Dakota Johnson portrayed Amelia Ritter, also known as Amy, in The Social Network. She played a young Stanford student who became romantically involved with Sean Parker, a character portrayed by Justin Timberlake, after meeting him at a bar. The film, released in 2010, is a dramatic narrative depicting Mark Zuckerberg’s journey in founding Facebook, with Parker being the creator of Napster.

Dakota Johnson Reflects on The Social Network and an Awkward Encounter with Barack Obama

In the interview, Dakota Johnson also shared insights about her time filming The Social Network and the numerous takes she performed with Timberlake. She noted while watching a particular scene:

“I think that because this was The Social Network and David Fincher, we did this so many times that I’m like, I’m in it. I know it, I know all the lines. It’s still there. We did it so many times that I feel like I remember this and it’s happening now. Maybe I was traumatized.”

This wasn’t the first time that Johnson recalled her brief scene in the film. During a reunion with co-star Andrew Garfield for another Vanity Fair interview on January 18, 2022, Johnson mentioned her short appearance. Garfield, who played Eduardo Saverin, engaged her in conversation about their film experience.

Johnson humorously noted that her on-screen time was only about “four seconds,”yet she cherished the experience of soaking up the atmosphere on set, joining the cast for lunches and discussions, saying that Garfield would ask her “loads of questions.”

In the current interview, Dakota Johnson recounted an embarrassing encounter with former President Barack Obama. She shared that when her mother, Melanie Griffith, introduced her, she awkwardly mentioned that Johnson had just starred in The Social Network and was “in her underwear.”Johnson expressed her discomfort during that moment, saying she essentially “died inside.”

Additionally, throughout the Vanity Fair interview, Johnson revisited scenes from some of her most prominent projects, including The Lost Daughter, Suspiria, The Peanut Butter Falcon, and more.
