Daisy Ridley Discusses ‘Cleaner’: The Physical Challenges, Cursing, and Overcoming Her Fear of Heights

Daisy Ridley Takes on Heights in New Film “Cleaner”

Daisy Ridley, known for her role in the Star Wars saga, is once again showcasing her ability to tackle challenging roles. In her latest film, Cleaner, she portrays an ex-soldier-turned-window washer. The plot centers around her relentless effort to save a group of hostages, all while confronting her own fears.

In an exclusive interview with The Mary Sue, Ridley delved into her experience on set, discussing the camaraderie with her co-stars and the physical challenges of her role. Despite having to face her fear of heights, she emphasizes the importance of physical preparation in embodying her character.

A Fear Confronted

“I really don’t like heights, ” Ridley candidly admitted. She elaborated, “But I had prep time physically, which I always find to be really helpful. Emotionally, it’s very comforting to get used to the people you’re working with. I felt comfortable in that zone emotionally.” This insight reflects the dedication she brings to her craft, establishing a connection with her cast that ultimately enhances her performance.

In stark contrast to Ridley’s apprehension, her co-star Taz Skylar exudes enthusiasm for heights. In a discussion with The Mary Sue, he shared his excitement: “I’m quite a fan of heights; I love jumping out of planes.” He even expressed his disappointment in not having the opportunity to perform more daring stunts. Yet, he remains fully supportive of Ridley’s work ethic and bravery.

“I respect what she’s done, I respect how hard she works, ” Skylar stated.

Character Depth and Grit

Ridley’s character brings a refreshingly gritty edge to the film. She appreciates the complexity of her role, noting, “I feel she’s very—I’m not like that, but I like that she’s super scrappy.” The dialogue, rich with colorful language, adds to the character’s authenticity. Ridley mentioned, “There was so much to play with, but for the most part, I love that she was foul-mouthed.” However, some of the more intense language had to be toned down, underscoring a balance between authenticity and production considerations.

Adding to her commentary, Ridley recalled a director’s advice: “There always has to be a reason behind it.” This mantra illustrates her character’s journey to express herself despite the backdrop of chaos surrounding her. Ridley captures the essence of her role with both humor and seriousness, navigating the emotional landscape her character represents.

The film Cleaner is set to hit theaters on February 21, 2025, and promises to showcase Ridley’s talent in a unique and exciting way.
