DaBaby, whose real name is Jonathan Lyndale Kirk, has officially resolved his 2021 lawsuit brought against him by Gary Pagar, the owner of the rental property in Hollywood Hills where the rapper filmed a music video. According to the lawsuit, Pagar accused DaBaby of recording footage inside the mansion without his consent. This incident reportedly occurred in 2020, and Pagar claimed that DaBaby physically assaulted him during the confrontation over the video shoot.
As reported by Billboard, the lawsuit details that after Pagar confronted the artist about the unauthorized video filming, DaBaby allegedly “beat, punched, spat on, threatened, shoved, and robbed” him. The complaint indicates that Gary had rented the house to DaBaby for “a private vacation with no more than nine people.”
Furthermore, the rental agreement explicitly stated that there would be “no crowds, no parties, and no filming.”
The complaint further elaborated:
“In fact, the purpose of the defendants’ trip to Los Angeles was to gather 40 people and a commercial film crew at Mr. Pagar’s house to film a music video. When Mr. Pagar asked them to stop, they beat and battered him, stole his phone by force so he couldn’t call the police, and threatened him. Then they vandalized his house and left, after stealing various valuable items.”
However, according to court documents filed on September 25, 2024, both DaBaby and Gary Pagar have come to a “global settlement,” with the specific terms remaining undisclosed.
Racial Slur Allegations: DaBaby Opens Up About Encounter with Pagar
After settling this longstanding dispute, DaBaby addressed allegations made by Pagar regarding the violation of rental rules. Furthermore, while Pagar accused the rapper of assaulting him, DaBaby countered those allegations by asserting that Pagar used racial slurs during their encounter.
During an April 2022 court session, DaBaby presented video evidence showing Pagar using racial slurs, asserting that Pagar was unaware he was being recorded during their argument.
In addition, Pagar alleged that DaBaby damaged several security cameras and only paid a portion of his rent. Ultimately, the case concluded when DaBaby pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor battery in a hearing held on July 11, 2024.
Rolling Stone reported that as part of the plea agreement, DaBaby agreed to pay restitution and serve one year of probation. Notably, the disputes stemmed from the filming of the music video for the song “Play U Lay”at the rental property.
This legal matter isn’t the only trouble DaBaby has faced. He was also allegedly involved in a 2018 shooting in North Carolina that resulted in the death of a 19-year-old. Additionally, he was detained in January 2020 for a robbery case, which was later resolved after he spent a few days in Miami-Dade County Jail.
