Paramount Pictures has finalized the casting for its eagerly anticipated film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling fantasy series, “Children of Blood and Bone.”This film promises to infuse the cinematic landscape with fresh energy, as it features an ensemble that includes celebrated actors such as Cynthia Erivo, Idris Elba, and Viola Davis. When discussing notable fantasy film adaptations, one cannot overlook the monumental impact of Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings”trilogy, which remains a benchmark in the genre. Although Jackson’s later “Hobbit”series performed well at the box office, it did not quite capture the magic of his earlier work.
In the wake of the original trilogy’s success, numerous studios have sought to create their own fantasy franchises, resulting in adaptations like “The Chronicles of Narnia”and “Percy Jackson.”More recently, the television sector has significantly embraced fantasy narratives, exemplified by shows like “Game of Thrones”, “House of the Dragon”, “The Witcher”, and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.”Yet, many cherished fantasy tales await adaption, notably Brandon Sanderson’s “The Stormlight Archive,”Robin Hobb’s “Farseer”trilogy, and Adeyemi’s own Children of Blood and Bone.

The long-awaited film adaptation is being directed by the acclaimed Gina Prince-Bythewood, known for her work on “The Woman King.”She has collaborated with Adeyemi to co-write the screenplay for this cinematic venture.
The lead roles in “Children of Blood and Bone”will be portrayed by Thuso Mbedu as Zélie, Amandla Stenberg as Amari, Damson Idris as Inan, and Tosin Cole as Tzain. Furthermore, Viola Davis is set to play Mama Agba, while Cynthia Erivo will take on the role of Admiral Kaea and Idris Elba will be featured as Lekan. Lashana Lynch is also included as Jumoke, and Chiwetel Ejiofor will portray the antagonist King Saran.
Notably, when the book was published in 2018, Adeyemi envisioned Viola Davis as Mama Agba and Idris Elba as King Saran, although Elba will now depict Lekan. Additionally, Regina King is currently in negotiations for the role of Queen Nehanda, with Diaana Babnicova and Bukky Bakray being considered for other significant roles.
Production is set to commence in South Africa soon, following an open casting call for actors based in Nigeria. Reflecting on the project, director Gina Prince-Bythewood stated:

“Children of Blood and Bone”is well-positioned to evolve into a blockbuster film franchise, thanks to its already established fan base. However, its journey to the big screen has been fraught with challenges. Initially, the film rights were acquired by Fox 2000 prior to the book’s release. After Fox 2000 was dissolved following its acquisition by Disney, the project shifted to Lucasfilm, where Kay Oyegun was brought on to write the script. Eventually, by 2022, Paramount obtained the rights, with Adeyemi writing the screenplay and Prince-Bythewood taking the director’s chair.
Now, with an ensemble featuring Oscar winners and renowned performers, “Children of Blood and Bone”is poised to carve its niche within the pantheon of major fantasy franchises, akin to “The Lord of the Rings”and “Harry Potter,”the latter of which notably influenced Adeyemi during her writing process.
Our Perspective on Children of Blood & Bone’s Cast
A Blend of Fresh Talent and Acclaimed Actors

Similar to iconic franchises like “Harry Potter,””Children of Blood and Bone”casts newcomers in lead roles, with Thuso Mbedu portraying the protagonist Zélie Adebola and Tosin Cole as her brother Tzain. Amandla Stenberg enjoys the distinction of being the most recognized name in the lead cast, playing Princess Amari, while Damson Idris assumes the role of her brother Prince Inan.

Although the lead roles are largely filled with lesser-known actors, the supporting cast shines with heavyweights like Viola Davis as Zélie’s mother, two-time Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea, six-time Emmy nominee Idris Elba as Lekan, and Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor as King Saran. The mix of fresh faces and seasoned performers is crucial for ensuring the film’s emotional depth and mass appeal.
