Current Whereabouts of John Peek: Insights Ahead of NBC’s Dateline
The next episode of NBC’s renowned true crime series, Dateline, will delve into the chilling case of John Peek, who committed murders of two wives to claim their life insurance benefits. While he almost evaded justice after killing his first common-law spouse, Carol Marlin, he ultimately faced the law for his subsequent crime.
Titled “Deadly Omission,”this episode will explore the details surrounding Peek’s actions. According to NBC, the episode’s synopsis is as follows:
“A woman’s murder brings light to an unsolved case from years prior. As the links between the two events unfold, a long-buried secret emerges.”
After John Peek took the life of his second wife, Kasi Peek, law enforcement was adept at making the connections needed to tie him to the earlier murder—a case where he was initially a suspect but couldn’t be charged due to insufficient physical evidence.
Peek eventually received a life sentence for three murders, one of which involved his first wife’s colleague, who was present during Carol’s murder. He was sentenced to three consecutive life terms and is currently incarcerated at Wilcox State Prison located in Abbeville, Georgia.
What actions did John Peek take?
Residing in Marietta, Georgia, John Peek was an IT professional working for Lockheed Martin, while his spouse Carol Marlin served as a program planner at the same company. On June 13, 1996, he reported Carol missing, claiming she had gone out with a 64-year-old colleague named Margaret Ginn without returning.
During the investigation, authorities visited Ginn’s home, where they tragically discovered both women unresponsive—Marlin was found deceased in the dining room and Ginn in the bedroom. Each had suffered fatal blunt force trauma, with Marlin showing signs of extreme violence.
When questioned by police, Peek asserted that he had eaten at a fast-food restaurant and returned home the night Carol disappeared. He mentioned a vague threatening message purportedly received by some Lockheed employees.
The investigation unveiled several incriminating clues linked back to John Peek, including the revelation that Carol had named him the primary beneficiary of a contentious $700,000 life insurance policy merely weeks before her tragic death. Despite these indicators, the absence of solid physical evidence resulted in the case not advancing further at that time.
This changed on October 2, 2005, when authorities received a distress call from Smyrna. Upon arrival, they discovered Kasi Peek fatally shot in the back. The evidence at the scene suggested that her murder was staged to resemble a robbery.
With parallels to the previous murder, John became the prime suspect again. The pivotal piece of evidence came when investigators uncovered documents showing that he had been effectively double-insuring Kasi to prevent policy cancellation. This information was sufficient for law enforcement to arrest and charge him.
What is John Peek’s current status?
Before going to trial, John faced three murder charges, which could have led to the death penalty. To circumvent this outcome, he pled guilty to all counts, resulting in three life sentences to be served concurrently without the chance of parole.
John Peek remains confined to Wilcox State Prison in Abbeville, Georgia, where he will live out the duration of his life sentence.
