The Menendez brothers, Lyle and Erik, faced three trials for the first-degree murder of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez. They fatally shot their parents at home and initially claimed they were attending a film festival during the time of the murders.

Suspicion arose when the brothers began living lavishly off their inheritance, prompting police investigation. Their arrest followed the revelation by Judalyn Smith, the mistress of Erik’s therapist, Dr. Oziel, who reported overhearing the brothers confess to the murders outside of Oziel’s office.

These trials included one that garnered significant media attention and was widely televised, making the Menendez brothers a national sensation with many captivated by their story.

In March 1996, both Lyle and Erik were found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Initially, they were incarcerated in different facilities, with Lyle located at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione, California, and Erik at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego. However, in 2018, Lyle was transferred to San Diego, reuniting him with Erik.

Within the prison system, the brothers have created lives for themselves; Erik married his pen pal, Tammi Ruth, in 1999, while Lyle established a support group for inmates who had experienced sexual abuse. Currently, Lyle is married to Rebecca Sneed.

In 2023, a former member of the Puerto Rican band Menudo, named Rosselló, made allegations against José Menendez, claiming that he had been drugged and abused by the former Hollywood executive, which further supports Erik and Lyle’s narrative.

Since 2023, the brothers’ legal team has been submitting petitions to reassess their convictions. However, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office has not yet responded to these petitions. Should their request be considered, a new trial could be on the horizon for Lyle and Erik.

For a dramatic retelling of the Menendez brothers’ saga, viewers can watch Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, now streaming on Netflix.
