As detailed in This is the Zodiac Speaking, David Seawater was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He passed away in the hospital, surrounded by his siblings and supporters, as he took his final breath. David featured prominently in all three episodes of the series, offering pivotal insights about Arthur Leigh Allen.

What Did David Seawater Hope to Achieve Before His Passing?

David expressed a desire to uncover the truth behind the infamous Zodiac killer, aiming to bring closure to the investigation that has persisted for decades. Unfortunately, his quest for answers remains unfulfilled, as the Zodiac mystery continues to baffle experts.

In This is the Zodiac Speaking, David articulated his thoughts, saying:

“Now I am getting older. I realize that maybe our information can help something…and give everybody closure that is involved in it. I really hope we will find out. I really do. I would love to be able to close this, to have it done…it’s just been going on for so long, and just to have it over with would be a great thing…”

The docuseries reveals that in 1992, David confronted Arthur Leigh Allen, inquiring if he had drugged him and his sister, Connie. Allegedly, Allen confessed to David that he had indeed drugged and abused Connie and even claimed he was the Zodiac killer.

Recalling his final conversation with Allen, David shared:

“…I asked Mr. Allen, were you the Zodiac? There was deathly silence. I didn’t hear anything for a second. I hear this gasping noise. He was just crying. He collected himself enough and he came back on in a real weak voice. He goes, ‘Yes, it was me.’ That was the last time I talked to him.”

After that pivotal phone call, David attempted to report his contact to the police, but they could not act due to insufficient evidence. He then reached out to his mother, Phyllis Seawater, to share the shocking revelation; however, she reacted negatively, instructing him not to disclose anything about Arthur Leigh Allen.

Nevertheless, Phyllis later mentioned a box containing additional information about the Zodiac case, indicating David could only open it after her passing. Upon her death, the box was discovered, revealing mainly letters from Allen to Phyllis and a VCR tape with recorded footage of Allen, among other materials. While this evidence suggested that Phyllis had concealed key information from her children, it did not significantly contribute to solving the Zodiac killer mystery.
