The upcoming HBO docuseries, I Am Not a Monster: The Lois Riess Murders, delves into the chilling double homicide case involving David Riess and Pamela Hutchinson, committed by Lois Riess, the former spouse of one of the victims. Directed by the highly regarded Erin Lee Carr, this two-part series will explore the horrific murders while also shedding light on Lois Riess’s perspective.

Lois Riess is accused of murdering her husband in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, before escaping to Fort Myers Beach, Florida, where she is believed to have killed Pamela Hutchinson in an attempt to assume her identity. Almost a year elapsed before law enforcement apprehended her.

Scheduled to debut on October 15, 2024, at 9:00 PM EST, the two-part docuseries will be available for viewing on both HBO and Max. The episode’s synopsis reads:

“In 2018, the community of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, is left in shock when Lois Riess takes the life of her husband David and goes on the run; years later, Lois shares her story with the filmmakers for the first time.”

Following her capture, Lois was charged with first-degree murder concerning Pamela Hutchinson’s death. She accepted a plea deal and received a life sentence without parole. Subsequently, she faced charges for David Riess’s murder in Minnesota and was again sentenced to life imprisonment. She currently resides at the mixed-security Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee, Scott County.

What actions did Lois Riess take?

Lois lived with her husband in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota. While the circumstances of the murder remain unclear, David Riess was found dead at their residence on March 23, 2018. Shortly thereafter, Lois traveled to Fort Myers Beach, Florida.

In Florida, she is accused of meeting Pamela Hutchinson, a woman from Bradenton, who was there on April 3, 2018, to assist a friend in scattering her husband’s ashes. Witnesses reportedly spotted the two multiple times at various resorts and hotels, leading investigators to believe Lois may have stayed at Holly’s hotel.

On April 9, 2018, authorities discovered Hutchinson’s body in her hotel room. Allegedly, Lois murdered her to steal her identity, as they were reported to resemble each other, making Hutchinson a prime target for this heinous act. Once detectives established a link between the two murders, a nationwide manhunt ensued.

Lois was eventually apprehended on April 19, 2018, at South Padre Island, Texas, after she withdrew funds from her deceased husband’s account, leading to charges of theft and murder.

She accepted a plea bargain and was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole. Concurrently, Minnesota’s Dodge County Sheriff’s Office announced plans to extradite her back to Minnesota regarding the earlier murder.

In 2020, she pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for killing David Riess as well and received yet another life sentence without the possibility of parole. Under an extradition agreement between Florida and Minnesota, she was relocated to the mixed-security Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee, Scott County, where she remains today.
