Current Location of David Sweat: A Look into Netflix’s Escape at Dannemora Criminal’s Whereabouts

Escape at Dannemora is an original series by Showtime that premiered on November 18, 2018. This gripping drama is inspired by the actual prison escape that took place at the Clinton Correctional Facility on June 6, 2015.

The infamous escape involved two inmates, Richard Matt and David Sweat, who utilized hacksaw blades and drill bits provided by prison staff to break through the walls of their cells. They then cut into a steam pipe, making their way into the city’s sewer system to flee.

Richard Matt met his demise three weeks later during a gunfight with law enforcement, while David Sweat was captured alive. Following his recapture, Sweat was ordered to pay $80,000 in damages to the prison, as reported by NBC News in November 2015.

In April 2022, CNN reported that David Sweat had initiated a hunger strike on March 25, after his transfer to the Great Meadow Correctional Facility. He insisted that this protest was motivated by a desire to be moved to a prison closer to his home, away from Clinton Correctional Facility. Consequently, a judge allowed prison authorities to administer force-feeding. Since then, no further updates have been provided regarding Sweat’s situation.

Escape at Dannemora presents a dramatized portrayal of the 2015 escape orchestrated by David Sweat and Richard Matt from the Clinton Correctional Facility. They managed to evade capture with the assistance of two prison staff members, Joyce “Tilly”Mitchell and Gene Palmer.

These employees facilitated the inmates’ acquisition of the necessary tools to tunnel through the prison walls, in a breakout reminiscent of scenes from The Shawshank Redemption. After their escape, David Sweat and Richard Matt remained at large for three weeks until law enforcement apprehended them.

In the series, Richard Matt is portrayed by Benicio del Toro, known for his performances in Traffic, Sicario, and Escobar: Paradise Lost. Meanwhile, Paul Dano takes on the role of David Sweat; he gained recognition for his portrayal of the Riddler in Matt Reeves’s The Batman, for which he also created a prequel comic titled The Riddle: Year One.

David Sweat’s Current Incarceration Status

David Sweat was reported to be held at the Great Meadow Correctional Facility after being transferred from the Shawangunk Correctional Facility. This transfer was the catalyst for his hunger strike.

Warren County Judge Robert Muller reviewed a request from prison authorities, allowing them to proceed with force-feeding Sweat amid his hunger strike. The court authorized this intervention, including the provision of medical care for any health issues resulting from the feeding methods.

This court decision pressured David to abandon his hunger strike and adhere to the prison regulations. His attorney, Matthew Bliss, refrained from making any media statements.

Solely concerning his hunger strike, no significant news has emerged regarding David Sweat since then. As a result of Richard Matt’s fatal confrontation with law enforcement, David is currently the only surviving inmate from the 2015 escape. Additionally, Joyce Mitchell and Gene Palmer, who played roles in the escape, were also captured and are serving time in prison.
