Current Ages of the Menendez Brothers: How Old Are They Now?

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story delves into the infamous case of the Menendez brothers, who were convicted of murdering their parents in the late 1980s. This gripping narrative explores the horrific details of the crime and the sensational trial that seized the public’s interest throughout the 1990s.

Featuring standout performances by Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez, the series revisits the chilling moments of the trial, revealing dramatic family dynamics and shocking discoveries. Notably, Lyle Menendez is now 56 years old, while his younger brother Erik is 53 years old.

In August 1989, the brothers, aged 21 and 18, shot their parents multiple times in their luxurious Beverly Hills mansion. The shocking nature of the crime left many reeling. Initially, the brothers evaded suspicion, but further investigations unveiled their extravagant spending habits, leading to their arrest and subsequent conviction for the murders.

How did the Menendez brothers kill their parents?

On the night of August 20, 1989, Lyle and Erik Menendez shot their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, multiple times in their opulent Beverly Hills residence. Kitty sustained ten gunshot wounds, while José was shot six times, including a lethal shot to the back of his head.

After the murders, the brothers attempted to establish an alibi by watching the movie Batman. Once home, they called 911, with Erik tearfully alleging that strangers had killed their parents. Initially, law enforcement did not suspect the brothers; they were not tested for gunshot residue, nor were their alibis properly questioned.

Authorities instead explored various alternative explanations, including potential mob ties. It wasn’t until the brothers began depleting their inheritance—reportedly spending $700,000 within six months—that suspicions grew. This, combined with new information from a psychologist, ultimately led to their arrest.

What happened during the Menendez brothers’ trial?

Regarded as one of the most publicized legal proceedings of the 1990s, the Menendez brothers’ trial attracted extensive media coverage and became a subject of numerous case studies. They faced multiple jury trials between 1993 and 1996, with the case ending in a mistrial amid immense public scrutiny.

The prosecution painted the brothers as ruthless killers who plotted the murder to inherit their parents’ substantial fortune. In contrast, the defense claimed that the brothers had suffered abuse and that their actions were a desperate act of self-defense on that fateful day.

In March 1996, Lyle and Erik Menendez were ultimately found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Consequently, they were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The allegations of abuse that Lyle and Erik claimed have since remained contentious, and over the years, the brothers have filed several unsuccessful appeals.

Where are the Menendez brothers now?

As of September 2024, Lyle and Erik Menendez are incarcerated at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego. Before their reunion, they spent over two decades in separate facilities—Lyle at Mule Creek State Prison and Erik at Pleasant Valley Prison.

They were reunited in the same facility in April 2018 after nearly 22 years apart, with their poignant reunion marked by a silent embrace upon seeing each other for the first time since 1996.

The Menendez brothers remain incarcerated, serving life sentences with no chance of parole. In 2023, they submitted a new appeal based largely on testimony from Roy Rosselló, a former member of the band Menudo and a friend of the brothers, who claimed to have also been sexually abused by José Menendez. Despite these developments, the brothers’ futures remain bleak, with no current prospects for release.

For a detailed breakdown of their prison sentences and ongoing legal battles, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
