CrowdStrike Causes App Crashes on Windows 11 24H2 Again

Microsoft has issued a caution regarding Windows 11 version 24H2, indicating that compatibility issues with certain antivirus applications are resulting in programs like Excel and Word becoming unresponsive and freezing. Thankfully, a temporary fix has been provided to address this glitch.

A report available on the Microsoft Support website explains that the issue predominantly impacts organizations using CrowdStrike’s Falcon sensor software—previously linked to widespread blue screen errors earlier this year—along with the Enhanced Exploitation Visibility Prevention Policy feature enabled in the host’s Prevention Policy. Microsoft indicates that these application freezes occur following either in-place updates or a clean installation of Windows 11 version 24H2.

Currently, it remains unclear if other versions of Windows are experiencing similar issues. Furthermore, users operating Home or Pro editions of Windows 11 version 24H2 do not seem to be affected by this bug.

Fortunately, a temporary resolution is already in place. According to Microsoft, CrowdStrike has addressed the issue by disabling the problematic features within their software. A more permanent solution is expected to be released in the future.

The issue has been mitigated. CrowdStrike has temporarily turned off the Enhanced Exploitation Visibility Prevention Policy setting on hosts running Windows 11, version 24H2.

The freezing of applications linked to antivirus software is one of several bugs identified in the newly released Windows 11 version 24H2.
