WARNING: May Contain Spoilers for Titans #19!
In an electrifying return to DC Comics, an enigmatic supervillain known for nearly annihilating the multiverse is setting his sights on the Titans. While he operates as a pawn in a much larger scheme orchestrated by another villain, this alliance poses a significant threat not only to the Titans but also to the recently re-established Justice League.
The stakes are high, particularly if this formidable adversary can successfully exploit Raven’s emotions. The consequences could spell disaster for the Titans.
In Titans #19, crafted by John Layman, Serg Acuña, Matt Herms, and Wes Abbott, dynamic action unfolds as the Titans confront Killer Frost, a former villain who has since redeemed herself and allied with the Justice League. However, the tides turn when Frost spirals into paranoia, fueled by a belief that her peers are sneering at her and doubting her worth, leading her back to villainy. Underlying this shift is the machination of the notorious Psycho-Pirate.

Psycho-Pirate, who first graced the pages of All-Star Comics #23 in 1944, possesses the unique ability to manipulate emotions. Despite his deep-rooted history in the world of comics, he has not achieved the esteemed notoriety of heavy-hitters like Darkseid or the Joker. His most pivotal moment came during the iconic Crisis on Infinite Earths, where he played a crucial role as a tool of the Anti-Monitor, exacerbating a cosmic collapse.

Once again, Psycho-Pirate is employing his powers to create discord among DC’s finest heroes, reminiscent of his manipulations during the Crisis event. Killer Frost’s rapid transition back to villainy is unveiled as a result of his orchestrations. In a conversation with Deathstroke, who has recently inducted Psycho-Pirate into his new supervillain team, he confesses to targeting the emotionally precarious Killer Frost. By augmenting her feelings of loneliness and insecurity, Psycho-Pirate skillfully enhanced her paranoia to catastrophic levels.
This manipulation echoes the tactics used in the Crisis on Infinite Earths, where heroes such as Supergirl faced similar destabilizations. The fallout from Frost’s explosive behavior is felt not just within the Justice League but also amongst the Titans, potentially fracturing team dynamics, exactly as Deathstroke planned. His nefarious goal? To dismantle both teams, utilizing Psycho-Pirate as a key asset in executing this grand scheme.

During their unsettling conversation, Deathstroke reveals a grim truth: Psycho-Pirate has targeted Raven as his next victim. As depicted in previous editions, Raven is grappling with her empathic abilities after unifying with her darker aspect, the Dark-Winged Queen. Her mounting instability renders her particularly susceptible, potentially leading to catastrophic ramifications for the Titans, especially given her integral role as one of their strongest members. The likelihood of Psycho-Pirate successfully manipulating Raven’s emotions raises the alarm bells for the Titans.
