Under the visionary direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the DC Universe (DCU) is flourishing, marking a significant turn in the tale of expanded superhero narratives. Creature Commandos has emerged as an unconventional yet refreshing entry, unveiling a whimsical ensemble that outshines even the Suicide Squad. As the season finale approaches, the series hints at new additions to its already intriguing cast.

Prior to the airing of the finale, Season 2 of Creature Commandos was already greenlit. In the episode titled “A Very Funny Monster,”aired on January 9, Gunn set the stage for exhilarating developments ahead. The season finale was not without its emotional moments, as fans bid farewell to the beloved character Nina Mzursky, portrayed by Zoë Chao. The episode’s conclusion also saw the exit of Princess Ilana Rostovic, played by Maria Bakalova, narrowing the main cast while simultaneously teasing a broader roster for Season 2.

Introducing Nosferata and Khalis: New Faces in Creature Commandos

In the season finale, the Bride, portrayed by Indira Varma, played a crucial role in thwarting Princess Rostovic’s malevolent ambitions. This act of heroism led Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) to enhance the Non-Human Interment Division housed within Belle Reve prison, welcoming the Bride, Weasel (Sean Gunn), and Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk). Season 2 will see exciting new additions to their ranks, specifically Nosferata and Khalis.

The Creature Commandos made their comic debut in the 1980 installment of Weird War Tales (#93), featuring a dynamic team that included Lt. Matthew Shrieve, the first G.I. Robot, a werewolf named Warren Griffith, Sgt. Vincent Velcro, inspired by vampire lore, Pvt. Elliot “Lucky”Taylor (akin to Frankenstein’s monster), and Dr. Myrra Rhodes, a gorgon. The anticipated second season seems poised to align more closely with this initial lineup, particularly through the return of G.I. Robot and the introduction of Nosferata, the vampire. Furthermore, season 1 teased Khalis, a mummy, echoing the inclusion of a communications expert from the original comic team.

Nosferata made her first appearance in the series as an antagonist of Nina, alongside Congorilla, who met a tragic fate at the hands of the Bride. She reemerged in episode 7, positioning herself for recruitment into the Bride’s growing ensemble in Season 2. Introduced in Superboy Vol 4 #50 (1998), Nosferata aimed to conquer the Wild Lands using her vampiric abilities. Originating from the Project Moreau experiments of the 1940s, she is known for her alliance with various creatures, including Killa the gorilla in the comics, and has a history as an adversary of Superboy. Although Superboy’s presence in the DCU isn’t confirmed, his potential introduction along with the upcoming Superman reboot and the Supergirl series offers fertile ground for expansion.

As for Khalis, DC Comics features several iterations of this character, dating back to 2030 B.C. with the original being known as Hetepkheti Tefnakhte, an enemy of Doctor Fate. While the character was portrayed by Pierce Brosnan in Black Adam, the upcoming season of Creature Commandos is likely to feature Khalis II, first introduced in Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #1 (2011). Khalis II serves as a medic within a supernatural hero unit akin to the Creature Commandos, indicating a shared narrative universe.

Reintroducing King Shark

King Shark from 2021's The Suicide Squad

The roster is set to become even more exciting with the return of King Shark, a beloved character who did not feature in David Ayer’s 2016 adaptation but was portrayed by Sylvester Stallone in Gunn’s 2021 The Suicide Squad. While the film showcased returning favorites like Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag, it also refreshed its team with new antiheroes, allowing King Shark to thrive amid this unique ensemble.

King Shark enjoyed a resolution at the conclusion of his film arc, emerging victorious from the Battle of Valle Del Mar and securing his release thanks to Bloodsport’s (Idris Elba) negotiation with Waller. As his storyline resumes in Season 2, fans eagerly anticipate a deeper exploration of King Shark’s character, paralleling the individualized narratives dedicated to each member in the inaugural season. Gunn confirmed King Shark’s presence in the revamped lineup, stating:

“Nosferata, King Shark, who we’ve met in Suicide Squad, so it’s basically that King Shark…new, improved G.I. Robot, he’s not dead after all. He’s a robot. Then Khalis. So we got a mummy happening. I’m pretty interested in how we do a mummy. I’ve never been a big mummy guy. I’m a werewolf guy if I’m being honest with you.”

Though Stallone and Gunn have collaborated on previous projects, and with Stallone’s possible return as King Shark on the horizon, it has been confirmed that Diedrich Bader will voice the character in the upcoming season. Gunn commented on this transition:

“I thought he was great. He’s a great guy, and he came in and just did us a solid to come in here and do King Shark’s voice. You know it’s hard because you’re dealing with Sylvester Stallone’s iconic interpretation of King Shark, so Diedrich did an amazing job. He’s an amazing guy and an amazing voice actor.”

As fans await the return of the Creature Commandos, anticipation builds. Frank Grillo is confirmed to portray Rick Flag Sr. in the upcoming Superman film, but no details have been provided about the original cast’s reprisal in live-action roles. Moreover, with Gunn’s active involvement in Peacemaker season 2, there is hope for a crossover acknowledgment of the Creature Commandos, particularly considering the established connections to the Suicide Squad. For now, however, the Creature Commandos remain under the watchful eye of the Non-Human Interment Division.
