Creator Offers Candid Insights on Sweet Tooth Sequel Possibilities Following Final Season’s 93% Rotten Tomatoes Rating

Jim Mickle recently weighed in on the potential for a sequel to Sweet Tooth, expressing an openness to the idea. The Netflix adaptation, inspired by Jeff Lemire’s comic series, centers on Gus (played by Christian Convery), a unique character who is part human and part deer. Set in a post-apocalyptic landscape, Gus embarks on a quest for a fresh start alongside his gruff guardian, Tommy Jepperd (Nonso Anozie). With an impressive 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the series finale is set to premiere in June 2024.

During a conversation with ScreenRant at the Directors’ Guild of America Awards, Mickle emphasized that he views the conclusion of Sweet Tooth as definitive, particularly considering Convery’s rapid aging, which makes it challenging to portray the younger version of his character. Nonetheless, he acknowledged the potential for a new narrative direction through Sweet Tooth: The Return, the sequel comic from Lemire, should Netflix decide to pursue it. Here’s what Mickle had to say:

To me, I feel like that was kind of a perfect ending for the story. Especially because Christian is now 14 or 15. He’s a man, so I feel like that was the perfect ending for him. I love what Jeff [Lemire] did with Sweet Tooth: The Return, and there’s so much stuff [there].So, I would love to see somebody take that story because we sort of handed it off to him briefly. Somebody could take it from there, but I don’t know. It’s for Netflix to decide.

On the subject of his potential involvement in any future installments, Mickle noted:

At this point, yes. I think, right afterward, it was a little bit of a hard come-down after being immersed for five years in that story and those characters. But I think now, I’ve had enough distance to leave it in the past. So, yeah.

Mickle’s announcement that he will not be pursuing further involvement with Sweet Tooth suggests that any potential sequel is unlikely to happen under his guidance. This conclusion arrives after a dedicated five-year journey of development and production, as the series wraps up on a planned note. Convery’s age also poses a challenge for a direct continuation, requiring potential time jumps or recasting. However, such changes diverge from Lemire’s follow-up narrative, which takes place shortly after the original comic’s story.

Currently, Netflix maintains full ownership of the Sweet Tooth franchise, and Mickle mentioned Sweet Tooth: The Return as a foundation for possible future explorations. If Netflix opts to revisit this universe, they could adapt Lemire’s sequel or create an original storyline with new characters within the same realm. The series’ positive reception could also encourage Netflix to consider a spinoff or soft reboot, fostering further development.

A Variety of Directions Ahead

Mickle’s decision to step away from Sweet Tooth is understandable given his lengthy commitment to the project. Nevertheless, this opens the door for new creators to infuse fresh ideas into the narrative. Netflix has previously demonstrated its willingness to expand successful intellectual properties, and considering Sweet Tooth‘s positive critique, it remains a strong candidate for continued exploration.

Should Netflix decide to pursue another installment—whether by adapting Sweet Tooth: The Return or crafting a new storyline—the success of such efforts will hinge on the ability of a new creative team to skillfully navigate this transition.
