- This novel creature, dubbed Lullapi, has garnered an enthusiastic response from the Pokemon community on Reddit.
The world of Pokemon continues to inspire creativity among its fans, with numerous artists crafting unique interpretations of fan-favorite creatures. Recently, a delightful fan design emerged, showcasing a pre-evolution for the classic Gen 1 Pokemon, Lapras. While the franchise has included baby Pokémon throughout its history, many artists feel that the introduction of fresh pre-evolution designs has diminished in recent iterations. This sentiment has spurred fans to take matters into their own hands, resulting in imaginative new creations.
The vibrant Pokemon community thrives on creativity, producing not only custom creature designs but also engaging narratives and entire fan-made games. Over the past few years, we’ve seen a rise in fan-designed regional variants and Paradox Pokémon, especially with the recent announcement of Pokemon Legends: Z-A in early 2024. The resurgence of Mega Pokemon designs has further stimulated the creative process. Among these endeavors, fans often unveil their interpretations of baby Pokémon. In the official games, these baby species serve as pre-evolutions and while they typically lack in combat prowess, they shine in their cuteness and the bond they develop with players through friendship.
A standout among recent fan designs, crafted by artist qobrosii, is Lullapi, a charming Pokémon conceived as the pre-evolution of Lapras. Almost immediately, the design captured the admiration of Reddit users, who flooded the post with compliments. Lullapi bears a resemblance to Lapras but features a notably smaller body and a proportionately larger head, which is characteristic of many baby Pokémon designs. Further distinguishing itself, Lullapi sports a softer, lighter color palette compared to its predecessor, Lapras.
Inspiration for an Official Lapras Pre-evolution
Designing a baby version of Lapras is intriguing, especially considering ongoing fan theories about this popular Water and Ice-type Pokémon. A common speculation suggests that during the development of the original Pokemon Red and Blue, Lapras was intended to represent the final evolution of Squirtle, although it ultimately did not replace Blastoise. Despite their visual similarities, Lapras and Blastoise have no official connection in terms of their lore.

Many fans of adorable baby Pokémon have expressed their desire to see new designs introduced into the franchise. However, while the addition of pre-evolutions for long-standing Pokémon sounds appealing, it poses significant challenges regarding gameplay mechanics and maintaining continuity in the lore. This may explain the scarcity of new baby Pokémon in recent generations. With the upcoming release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, there lies potential for the inclusion of pre-evolutions for beloved Kalos Pokémon, especially if the game explores historical settings.
