As the new academic year begins, Google is enhancing the learning experience with innovative tools. Among these, the NotebookLM app introduces a compelling feature called Video Overviews, which simplifies complex study materials and notes into engaging narrated video slides. This guide will walk you through the process of creating Audio Overviews effortlessly with NotebookLM.
How to Create a Video Overview in NotebookLM
The Video Overview feature is exclusively accessible through the NotebookLM web interface. Users of the mobile app currently can only create Audio Overviews.

Step 1: Adding Your Sources
To get started, you’ll need to add sources to your notebook. You can include a maximum of 50 sources using various methods—dragging and dropping PDFs, uploading files, or simply pasting text.

NotebookLM also allows you to discover additional data sources based on your interests. Our article provides guidance on utilizing this functionality. In our example, we have included 10 sources using the discovery feature, which you can view on the left sidebar.

If you’d like to add more sources, simply click the +Add button.
Step 2: Customizing Your Video Overview
After adding your sources, navigate to the Studio section located on the right side of the interface. Here, you’ll find the Video Overview option, but hold off on selecting it for a moment.

Instead, click the three-dot icon on the card and choose Customize.
A pop-up menu will appear, permitting you to select the language for your Video Overview. While English is the default, NotebookLM now supports up to 80 languages, allowing you to upload English sources and generate a Video Overview in languages like Spanish or French.

You can also give specific instructions for the video creation, such as focusing on a particular source or assembling a review that encapsulates information from all selected sources, tailored to your preferred structure.
Step 3: Generating Your Video Overview
Once you’ve configured all relevant settings, click the Generate button to initiate the process. Note that customization is optional; you can proceed with the default settings should you choose.
The AI will take some time to create the Video Overview, so consider multitasking during the wait.
Upon completion, your Video Overview will appear within Studio. Select the play button beside it to start watching.

The Video Overview window will open on the right side of your screen. Click Play again to view it in the NotebookLM interface, or opt for full screen by clicking the designated icon.

Our tests revealed that NotebookLM produces 7-minute videos effectively summarizing key ideas from the sources in a structured and logical manner. Although not every detail may be included, the video successfully provides a clear overview of the topic (in our case, exploring the relationship between two royal sisters).
After watching, you can rate the video as Good or Bad, giving feedback that helps enhance the AI learning process for future video generations.
Currently, only narrated slides are available in Video Overviews, but Google plans to introduce additional formats over time.
Step 4: Downloading and Sharing Your Video
From the video preview window, you can conveniently download the video for offline storage or future viewing.

Additionally, you can share the video with others by selecting contacts from your Google list. NotebookLM will automatically email them the link to the video.

If you prefer to share a link manually, click on Restricted and change to Anyone with a link. Then select Click link to Video Overview. This action copies the link to your clipboard for easy sharing.

Bear in mind that recipients must log in with a Google account to view the Video Overview via the shared link.
Google’s NotebookLM is quickly becoming an indispensable companion for learners eager to expand their knowledge. For those studying on a Windows PC, consider exploring these essential apps that enhance your educational experience.
