Initially launched in 2011, Androidify presented a playful opportunity for users to craft and customize their own Android characters. Although Google discontinued the app in 2020, it has recently made a comeback, this time infused with advanced AI capabilities. In this guide, we’ll explore how to utilize the upgraded Androidify to design your very own personalized Android avatar.
The New Era of Androidify
The original Androidify provided users with an array of customization options for the iconic Android mascot, enabling modifications to skin tone, outfits, hairstyles, and various accessories. The enhanced iteration, however, elevates the user experience by integrating AI technology to generate avatars that reflect unique personal styles and facial features.
This revitalized version of Androidify is readily available on the Google Play Store as well as online via the official website. For the purposes of this tutorial, we will focus on the mobile app.
Designing Your Custom Android Bot
Launch the app on your mobile device and tap the Let’s Go button to initiate the process.

Next, you will be given the choice to either upload a photo or write a descriptive prompt. For this instance, I suggest beginning with the photo option as it allows for more accurate representation of the individual in the avatar.

Tap on Choose photo and navigate to your device’s gallery to locate your desired image.
Following that, you might want to select a Bot color. The default color is the iconic Android green, but you have the freedom to choose a different hue using the color selection option.

Finally, tap Transform and wait a few seconds while the app processes your request. Utilizing Gemini 2.5 Flash for photo captioning and Imagen for avatar generation, Androidify will craft your custom character.

Your personalized Android bot will encapsulate key features from the uploaded photo, such as hair color, clothing, and personal accessories. For additional personalization, tap on Customize and Share.

Google also provides various display formats for your bot, allowing you to set it as a banner or wallpaper for your Android device’s home screen, or even transform it into a sticker.

If you’re not fond of the default plain white background, switch to the Background tab within the bot viewing interface. Here, Google offers AI-generated background options for you to experiment with. Simply swipe through options and tap to select one; it may take a few seconds for the background to render.

Once satisfied with your creation, press Share your bot to distribute your personalized avatar via social media or email. Alternatively, you can opt to download it directly to your device for future use.
Exploring the Prompt Feature
If you prefer not to upload personal images into yet another Google app, or wish to delve into your creativity, consider using the Prompt option.

Write a detailed description of the avatar you envision. The excitement here lies in the freedom to describe any appearance, not just your own. If you find yourself lacking inspiration, the Help me write feature allows Google to generate a descriptive text for you.
For instance, I devised a description, and while Androidify closely followed my guidelines, not all specifics were envisioned, showcasing that the more details you provide, the better the final product.

In another instance, I employed the Help me write function, and received a tailored description that I could adjust before clicking Transform.

It’s noteworthy that in the web version of Androidify, users are provided with suggestions for accessories to add to their bot, although these can also be included in the prompt.

Additionally, throughout this month, each Friday, the Androidify app will introduce a feature that allows users to animate their Android bots into an 8-second video, powered by Google’s Veo 3 model.
Accessing Your Android Bot Creations
One limitation of Androidify is the absence of a storage system for users’ avatars. Without requiring account creation, your creations won’t be preserved in a personal library, which means it’s crucial to save them immediately if you wish to keep them. Regenerating a bot will not yield an identical result even with the same image.
Exploring Alternatives to Androidify
Androidify holds a distinctive position due to its AI-driven approach to avatar creation from uploaded images or prompts. However, other applications employ similar AI techniques to generate diverse avatars, albeit not in the Android bot style. If you’re interested in trying alternatives, consider the following options:
Today, AI features are ubiquitous, especially in popular mobile photo-editing applications. The alternatives discussed here leverage artificial intelligence to enhance your photos in myriad creative ways. Why not experiment with them and see the results for yourself?
