- Kevin Williamson, the original screenwriter of the Scream series, will make his directorial debut with this installment, set for release on February 27, 2026.

David Arquette is officially back as Dewey Riley in Scream 7, despite the shocking demise of his character in the 2022 film. Arquette will reunite with a talented cast featuring Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown, creating a blend of nostalgia and new dynamics. This chapter welcomes several newcomers to the franchise, including Mckenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor, Joel McHale, Asa Germann, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Mark Consuelos, and Ethan Embry.
Significantly, Scream 7 marks the first time Kevin Williamson will sit in the director’s chair, a highly anticipated shift for fans, especially with the film set to release on February 27, 2026. However, not all previous cast members will return; Melissa Barrera was removed from the project due to controversial remarks she made about Israel, while Jenna Ortega’s commitments to Netflix’s Wednesday series conflicted with filming schedules.
Fans last saw Dewey Riley vulnerable against Ghostface’s wrath, which was revealed to be Amber Freeman, portrayed by Mikey Madison. Given the franchise’s history of dramatic twists, Arquette’s return isn’t the only surprise in store. Notably, both Scott Foley and Matthew Lillard are slated to reprise their deceased roles in this exciting sequel developed by Spyglass and Paramount Pictures.
Return of Iconic Characters in Scream 7

Courteney Cox, renowned for her role as Gale Weathers, has shown her support for Dewey’s return, remarking, “I understand the reasons they did it, but whoa! Talk about a missed character. Dewey is so loved by Scream fans. They have to figure it out.” Her sentiments resonate with the fanbase, bolstering excitement for the new film. Mason Gooding, another returning cast member, hinted at thrilling developments, sharing with Variety, “It feels like an amplification of what’s come before… Ghostface is absolutely the most brutal he’s been.” Gooding also teased that groundbreaking concepts surrounding horror elements are on the horizon, as Williamson brings fresh perspective to the franchise.
In contrast, Patrick Dempsey, known for his role as Detective Mark Kincaid, confirmed he will not reprise his character in Scream 7 due to logistical complications exacerbated by recent disasters such as fires. He elaborated in a statement to Variety that “it just didn’t work out and we were dealing with the fires and everything that was going on.”
