Confirmed Release Date for MTG Final Fantasy Expansion

During the recent press preview for MTG, the release date for the highly anticipated Final Fantasy expansion was announced. Attendees were treated to an exclusive look at the artwork from several forthcoming cards. This expansion has been on the radar since its announcement, initially shared alongside a set themed around Assassin’s Creed. Although that particular set has already been released, silence enveloped the game until the highlights of MagicCon: Las Vegas.

Though we still have a few months to go, the artwork suggests the wait will be rewarding. Featuring elements from every mainline installment, the expansion promises something for every fan. Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy are set to collide on June 13, 2025.

Featured Games in the MTG Final Fantasy Expansion

While the Final Fantasy MTG expansion isn’t the sole major collaboration slated for next year, it certainly stands out as my personal favorite. As a dedicated fan of the Final Fantasy series, I have certain characters and iconic moments I’m eager to see featured. Some of these hopes have already been validated by the artwork showcased at MagicCon: Las Vegas.

Concerns among fans arose, speculating that the expansion might focus predominantly on Final Fantasy VII, given its status as a beloved classic and the tremendous success of FF7 Remake and Rebirth.

However, this concern has already proven unfounded. In the initial preview, a variety of games were confirmed to be represented:

  • Final Fantasy VI: The Brush
  • Final Fantasy VII: Sephiroth
  • Final Fantasy IX (?): Delivery Moogle
  • Final Fantasy X: Tidus and Yuna
  • Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning
  • Final Fantasy XIV: Emet-Selch

There remains some ambiguity regarding the Moogle; it could either represent the Delivery Moogle from Final Fantasy XIV or the Mognet feature from Final Fantasy IX. The art is stunning and vast, showcasing the most extensive collection of Final Fantasy imagery ever compiled into a single game.

The preview also confirmed that iconic creatures such as Chocobos and Behemoths, as well as a diverse assortment of summons and monsters, will feature in the set. Notably, characters like Noctis, Terra, and Cloud have also been verified as participants.

Although detailed character stats will be revealed later, this is an exhilarating period for fans of Final Fantasy. The MTG Universes Beyond expansion is set to launch on June 13, 2025.
