The Fox represents a significant end-game target within the Assassin’s Creed Shadows universe, encompassing a complex questline rich with stealth, combat, and political drama. Set in the historical town of Obama, located in the Wakasa region, players embark on an engaging adventure to uncover the mysteries surrounding this elusive character.
While The Fox may appear to be an easily approachable target, he is not available for pursuit right from the outset. Engaging with this questline marks the final stages of your journey in the game, beckoning players to delve deeper into the narratives that await.
How to Initiate The Fox’s Questline
To kick off the quest involving The Fox, players must first complete the mission titled “Lords of Azuchi, ” integral to Yasuke’s backstory. Upon fulfilling this prerequisite, you can proceed to the next mission, “Red Walls.” It’s advisable to be at least level 32 to face the challenges present in the Wakasa region, as the enemies here are notably formidable.
After unlocking The Fox’s quest, navigate to your Shinbakufu interface and designate ‘The Fox’ as your primary target. The game will direct you to Nagahide, primarily located in the coastal setting of Wasaka, which is situated to the northwest of Omi.
Red Walls
Employ a scout to pinpoint Nagahide’s location and subsequently travel to Obama before heading north across the river to his estate. Be prepared for an incoming assault on his home, as enemies will arrive in numbers, though Nagahide will fight alongside you during this encounter, ensuring the challenge remains manageable.
Following the skirmish, a cutscene will unfold. Your dialogue choices afterward will not directly affect the story’s progression, so feel free to immerse yourself in your character. Nagahide will then introduce you to an information broker, Chef Hong.
Chef Hong
Chef Hong operates a bustling food stall in Obama, conveniently positioned across the river. If you are playing as Naoe during night hours, locating him will be considerably easier. Utilize her parkour abilities to traverse rooftops until you spot the recognizable red lanterns of Hong’s street.
Upon interacting with Hong, relish a meal while gathering intel. He will provide two critical leads: the first pertain to a pirate group under the command of a brigand known as Samemaru, and the second involves a series of attacks targeting the Niwa family. Regardless of your responses, these decisions won’t alter the mission’s path. This meeting paves the way for two additional quests, “Smuggler’s Gambit” and “Revenge, ” which can be approached in any order.
Smuggler’s Gambit
To confront Samemaru, simply entering his territory won’t suffice; you must first identify his concealed hideout. Travel north from Obama and curve northeast, moving past Hiruga Bay’s small island to reach his lair.
Once there, stealth is recommended—if not required. Scout the area for two vital clues: the first resides in a building at the western edge of the hideout, while the second can be discovered in an eastern dwelling along the cliff’s edge. Investigate both items to complete this segment of the quest.
For enhanced efficiency, consider utilizing your Observe skill to improve your ability to pinpoint clues.
Revenge
Next, make your way to Tsuraga Castle in Wakasa, which can be easily accessed by heading east from Sotomo Gate. The grounds are open to the public, so there’s no need for stealth or violence when approaching the local nobles.
Remain vigilant, as enemies equipped with ranged weapons may inflict significant damage while you deal with melee opponents.
Conversing with Nagahide’s cousin will trigger an ambush, requiring you to defend the Niwa family against an onslaught of attackers. It’s advised to visit Saifukuji Temple to uncover the identity of the musician related to the disturbances.
The Music
Your next destination is Saifukuji Temple, situated amidst lush hills to the west of Obama. Along your journey, you might encounter a villager in need of assistance to reach the temple. Helping them is optional but rewards you with a modest 20 mon.
Upon arrival at the temple, search for a Biwa player resting beneath a tree. He will play a recognizable melody and reveal the composer: Takeda Motoaki. Coincidentally, Motoaki has also been seen associating with pirates recently, effectively unveiling The Fox’s true identity.
The game references this character interchangeably as “The Fox”and “The Performer”throughout various dialogues and descriptions, indicating a single intricate character.
The Performer
Return to Chef Hong’s noodle stall in Obama to rendezvous with Nagahide again. Before embarking on this mission, ensure that your supplies and rations are fully stocked, as committing to this quest will lead you through the final leg of the storyline.
Upon beginning the mission, Samemaru will initiate an unexpected attack on the town, leading to a high-octane chase sequence as Yasuke. Pursue and confront the pirate leader, while guarding against their relentless attacks, which often conclude with a quick knife-throw.
Following the confrontation, control shifts back to Naoe. Use your Observe skill to highlight two objectives, one to the east and another southeast. Both paths will lead you towards your target. Taking the southeastern route may prove easier and slower, allowing you to follow someone back to the estate without engaging any guards. The eastern path, however, involves interrogating a nobleman for information, although this might summon a group of guards attempts to thwart you.
One last use of Observe will aid in locating The Performer. Engage with the notes in his residence to activate a cinematic sequence between the characters. Although The Fox is portrayed with a degree of sympathy, your dialogue options will not impact the course of the ensuing boss battle.
Takeda Motoaki wields a deadly poisoned katana and possesses several unblockable skills. Be cautious of his kicks, as they can initiate a devastating four-strike combo. Although he is powerful, he doesn’t rely on speed. Patience is key; maintain your distance until the opportunity to strike arises. Consider using the Kusarigama, as its extended range can be advantageous. Upon successfully defeating Motoaki, a final cutscene will reward players with a conclusive narrative moment.
