Comprehensive Guide to the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Moore Quest

UPDATE: We’ve added some additional, streamlined information about Moore’s quest to this page.

Exploring Moore’s Quest in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

In the expansive world of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, players encounter several intriguing NPCs, including the gentle character known as Moore. Unlike the many hostile beings you’ll face, Moore is a unique presence—his intentions are not to harm you but rather to assist you on your journey.

Moore may initially come across as a quiet figure, acting primarily as a merchant. However, he presents players with a significant choice that can sway the course of their quest. If you want to make the right decisions for Moore while playing, this guide will help you navigate the pivotal moments in his storyline, including whether to encourage him to ‘be sad forever’ or to ‘put it behind you’.

Be warned: spoilers regarding Moore’s quest and critical mid-game events are included below.

Your Guide to Moore’s Quest

  1. Initiate your interaction by speaking to Moore at the Main Gate Cross and buy an item from him to unlock further dialogue.
  2. Once you’ve met Thiollier, return to Moore and receive the Black Syrup item.
  3. After the shattering event, confer with Moore and encourage him to ‘put it behind you’.
  4. Look out for Moore’s appearance during a climactic late-game battle.
  5. Optional: Urge Moore to ‘be sad forever’ to prevent his future appearances.
  6. Optional: Defeat two Forager Broods prior to Moore’s decision-making moment, triggering his invasion.

Finding Moore

Moore belongs to Miquella’s Followers in the Shadow of the Erdtree and can first be spotted at the Main Gate Cross, located near Belurat Tower Settlement. His demeanor is generally amiable, as he enjoys collecting items that bring happiness to others—something quite endearing in the game’s dark atmosphere.

Following the event of a shattered ‘Great Rune’ in the Shadow of the Erdtree story, Moore approaches you with new items after you’ve encountered Thiollier at the Pillar Path Cross.

Once you return to Moore after your talk with Thiollier, he hands you the Black Syrup, which is meant for the poison merchant, and in return, you will acquire Thiollier’s Concoction—a rather hazardous potion that results in your death upon consumption.

After exploring the Scadu Altus and witnessing Miquella’s Rune shattering, Moore will present you with a crucial question that impacts his fate.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that Moore shares a friendly bond with several non-hostile pests scattered throughout the Land of Shadow. Interacting with them yields six Forager Cookbooks—valuable collectibles within the game.

Moore’s Decision: To Move Forward or Remain Sad?

Post the destruction of Miquella’s charm, Moore seeks your advice, and your response leads to different outcomes:

  • Encourage Moore to ‘put it behind you’ – He takes your counsel, only to resurface later as an adversary at Enir-Ilim.
  • Advise him to ‘be sad forever’ – This choice causes him to vanish, with his corpse later found on a cliff northwest of the Church of Crusade, where you can collect his gear and Bell Bearing.
  • Select ‘I don’t know’ – This option postpones your answer, allowing you to return to the question later. It is also essential if you want to gather all Forager Cookbooks, as Moore will move on after your interaction.

In my personal experience, I opted to tell Moore to be sad forever. It might seem cruel, but I was eager to take a gamble, believing FromSoftware might reward my darker choice. Plus, facing one less opponent later was a tactical advantage I couldn’t resist.

Early Termination of Moore’s Quest

In Shadow of the Erdtree, players do have the option to eliminate Moore prematurely, thus truncating his questline. To do this, one must defeat two Forager Broods.

These creatures are akin to the Kindreds of Rot from earlier regions like Caelid and Lake of Rot. Unlike their more aggressive counterparts, Forager Broods are passive and focus on foraging instead of attacking the player.

By engaging with them, you can collect several Cookbooks—seven in total scattered throughout the Shadow Realm. However, if you choose to kill two of them, Moore will invade your space. Upon defeating him, players can loot his body at the Main Gate Cross to acquire his gear and Bell Bearing, or simply disregard him and resume your quest (noting he might not act as if anything had occurred).Be mindful, though; this action cannot be taken once Moore’s critical decision moment has passed, as he will have moved to another location.
