Portal 2 stands as a pinnacle in gaming, offering an exceptional blend of stunning visuals, intuitive controls, and ingeniously crafted puzzles. Renowned for its sharp dialogue, the game captivates players while presenting challenging yet manageable obstacles. The seamless transition between puzzles keeps players engaged, eliminating the frustration of aimless wandering. Each room provides the necessary tools for players to solve puzzles, although Chapter 5 can prove particularly perplexing.
This guide aims to illuminate key aspects of Chapter 5, assisting players in navigating its challenges effectively, while noting that the cooperative mode introduces distinct puzzles separate from the single-player experience.
Navigating the Spiral Tube Room in Chapter 5

Your first challenge will involve a doorway that hesitates before fully opening. At the beginning of the chapter, shoot a portal through the partially opened door and place another on any available white surface in your starting room—a unique aspect of gameplay that showcases the brilliance of portal mechanics, albeit with limited application in this chapter. Exit through the door onto a metal walkway where Wheatley greets you.
As you follow Wheatley along the darkened rail, he will activate the lights, leading you to a stationary conveyor belt. Hop onto the conveyor and travel to the far end, locating a platform on your left. Continue along the metal path while listening to Wheatley’s dialogue until you arrive at a drop-off point leading to a moving conveyor belt below.
Travel along the conveyor, where you’ll encounter periodically moving panels—these pose no threat, unlike the lurking lasers. Keep an eye on the left as Wheatley tells you about a hidden opening nearby, which can be easily overlooked.
Once you spot the hidden opening, stay to the left and navigate to a broken walkway requiring a jump. After crossing, turn left and ascend the stairs. At the top, shoot a portal on the wall in front of you, scan upwards to find an opening behind the railings, and create a portal there. Go through the initial portal you placed to access the hidden area.
Once in the next room, wait for Wheatley to shine his light on a wall. Shoot a portal on this wall, then create another portal in the room, allowing you to step out onto a metal railing. Follow Wheatley as he points out another wall, shoot your portal, and proceed through it. At the first right, enter the room with a spiral tube. Traverse the spiral and leap over the railing to descend to the ground floor where a full door awaits access.
For an alternative approach, simply jump to the bottom area and create a portal on the white surface, gaining a vantage point into the room with the railing for additional portal placements.
Navigating the Assembly Lines of Chapter 5

Players will soon find themselves in a monitoring room. Create a portal leading to a moving conveyor and proceed to the next conveyor belt. At the far end, drop to the lower metal walkway, progressing until you encounter a turret in action. Position a portal above the turret’s target while placing another on a nearby wall. This strategy allows you to maneuver around the turret safely.
When the area is clear, position another portal behind the target and advance through it, continuing along the walkway and ascending attached steps.
Here, players can acquire a defective turret being thrown into an incinerator—seizing this opportunity will save you time. Continue on the path until Wheatley appears again. He’ll offer dialogue while creating an exit to a room; utilize this opportunity to place a portal and eliminate the master turret.
Your next task will involve finding a new turret template. Backtrack and repurpose one of the defective turrets being launched. Exit the room as the door unlocks and follow Wheatley through the hallways, where he humorously notes “Bring Your Daughter to Work Day” until you reach the next exit featuring a loading screen. This back-and-forth navigation embodies the escape room essence, appealing to fans of puzzle games.
Locating GLaDOS in Chapter 5 of Portal 2

Follow the passage to an elevator that ascends, where you’ll notice a laser striking a wall. Create a portal at this location and continue to the top of the stairwell, entering a room with a large pipe and several smaller pipes. Use your earlier portal to guide the laser to slice through the smaller pipes, effectively lowering the neurotoxin levels to zero. Utilizing turrets and lasers becomes central to solving various puzzles throughout the game.
The large white pipe will buckle, imploding dramatically as you exit the room, turning left into a chamber marked by shattering doors. Enter this area and get sucked into a pipe. As you regain control, place a portal on a wall, then look to the right end of the walkway to spot a blinking light. Create a portal on this surface and return through your first portal to arrive in a room with a door that appears to lead to GLaDOS’s emergency shut-off.
Typical of the Portal franchise, this is a clever ruse. GLaDOS launches into a monologue as you face a perilous situation with closing walls. Leap down when an opening becomes available, propelling you directly towards GLaDOS. The ensuing sequence will reveal the consequences of your actions throughout Chapter 5, culminating in a dialogue about a core transfer.
Note: Players may be astonished by the true scale of GLaDOS, especially those experiencing her presence through VR, where her imposing figure becomes even more pronounced.
Carry Wheatley to the receptacle and align him between yourself and GLaDOS on the left. A door will open after GLaDOS mentions a stalemate resolution button. GLaDOS will attempt to repel you with panels if you approach; strategically place a portal beside the button and another on the white floor panels nearby.
Pursue the button by alternating between portals, sprinting to press it. Position Wheatley on GLaDOS’s core and board the elevator when prompted. Relax as the events unfold inside the elevator, offering new insights and lore regarding the Portal universe.
