Complete List of Pokémon Cards from McDonald’s “Dragon Discovery” Happy Meal

McDonald’s has announced a fresh collaboration with the Pokémon Trading Card Game as part of its exciting Happy Meal promotion. Fast food giants like McDonald’s frequently partner with toy brands and film studios to create engaging cross-promotional campaigns. These initiatives often include collectible toys in children’s meals, enticing parents to purchase the meals while introducing kids to new popular franchises. In fact, for many young consumers, Happy Meals serve as the initial introduction to iconic brands.

Starting later this month, McDonald’s will launch its Pokémon Trading Card Game promotion across select locations in the United States. After skipping this popular campaign in 2024, the return of Pokémon cards in Happy Meals marks a welcome comeback that has almost become a yearly event. In recent collaborations, McDonald’s and The Pokémon Company have innovatively enriched the experience with not just cards but also mini-games and other fun prizes.

A Major Promotional Opportunity Returns

According to PokéBeach, the upcoming Pokémon TCG promotion is themed “Dragon Discovery”and will include a range of new items such as stickers and posters. While the focus is on Dragon-type Pokémon, recognizable characters like Pikachu and Charizard will also be featured. Each Happy Meal will include a special promo card pack containing four cards, with one card showcasing a holofoil design. This promotion offers a total of 15 unique cards, including seven holofoil variants, and will be available from January 21 to February 24.

One notable aspect of this Pokémon TCG promotion is the use of a distinctive “confetti pattern”holofoil that is exclusive to McDonald’s campaigns. This feature adds an extra incentive for collectors. Additionally, this year’s Happy Meals will come equipped with fresh stickers and innovative double-sided posters, some of which are designed to be completed with stickers, enhancing the interaction for kids. This replaces the Match Battle spinners introduced in the previous promotion.

Dragonite and Pikachu

Traditionally, Pokémon TCG Happy Meals include a Pikachu-themed box adorned with Pikachu ears. However, this year, McDonald’s offers four distinct Happy Meal boxes, each showcasing different Pokémon artwork. Featuring Charizard, Dragonite, Pikachu, Rayquaza, and Roaring Moon, these boxes provide variety for collectors. It’s no surprise that Pikachu is a staple, along with the well-loved Dragon-types Dragonite and Rayquaza. Interestingly, Charizard is not a Dragon-type, while Roaring Moon has only appeared in one version-exclusive Pokémon game.

Meanwhile, Charizard’s Mega Evolution, Mega Charizard X, is the only form classified as Dragon-type. Additional Pokémon appearing on promotional materials include Hydreigon, Miraidon, Eevee, and Umbreon. Hydreigon and Miraidon align with Dragon-type criteria, while the inclusion of Eevee and Umbreon highlights their popularity, ranking them just behind Pikachu in recognition. Furthermore, Dragapult features prominently on sticker puzzles alongside big names like Rayquaza and Charizard.

Which Cards Are In The New Pokémon Happy Meals

As highlighted earlier, all the cards in the Happy Meal promotion are reprints drawn from previous Pokémon card sets. Many originate from early Scarlet & Violet collections, with several cards also representing the Sword & Shield era. The collection has more than half of its Pokémon classified as Dragon-types, while others are chosen from the ranks of fan-favorites within the franchise. Among the curious selections are Hatenna and Quagsire; Hatenna could potentially stem from its role in the Pokémon Horizons anime, yet Quagsire’s inclusion seems less conventional.

The new Happy Meal promotion will feature the following cards:

  • #001: Charizard
  • #002: Pikachu (holo)
  • #003: Miraidon (run)
  • #004: Jigglypuff
  • #005: Hatena
  • #006: Dragapult
  • #007: Quagsire
  • #008: Koraidon (run)
  • #009: Umbreon
  • #010: Hydreigon (holo)
  • #011: Roaring Moon (holo)
  • #012: Dragonite (holo)
  • #013: Eevee
  • #014: Rayquaza
  • #015: Drampa (holo)

While none of the cards in the Pokémon TCG promotion are particularly impactful in competitive play, the holofoil designs boast a degree of collectibility. Notably, most cards from the 2023 Pokémon TCG McDonald’s promotion tend to sell for under a dollar, except for standout cards like Sprigatito and Pikachu, which reach around $2.50.

The relatively low resale value of these cards may deter scalpers from attempting to buy and resell them. Nevertheless, the Pokémon Trading Card Game is currently facing supply shortages, and given the popularity of such promotions, enthusiasts should aim to secure cards promptly.
