Checkmate in Black Ops 6 represents the final mission in the Campaign storyline. It can create some confusion because this mission unfolds concurrently with the preceding one, Separation Anxiety. While the latter can leave players scratching their heads, the Checkmate segment flows more clearly and serves as the concluding chapter.
The mission’s foundation is quite straightforward. The team is interrogating Harrow, who has been identified as a CIA mole. However, as the questioning intensifies, a group known as the Pantheons launches a rescue attempt, targeting the Rook—the operational base for Marshall and his squad. Frank Woods, confined to a wheelchair, continues the interrogation, while Marshall, Case, Adler, Sev, and Felix prepare to fend off the invading soldiers.
With the basics established, let’s dive into the specifics of the Checkmate mission and outline how to successfully navigate it.
Objectives for the “Checkmate”mission in Black Ops 6 Campaign
The objectives for the Checkmate mission in Black Ops 6 can be categorized into two main tasks:
- Defend the Rook from the Pantheon assault.
- Prevent Harrow from evading capture within the Rook.
Although the objectives seem direct, various encounters during the mission will challenge your shooting skills, particularly if you tackle the game at higher difficulty settings.
Defending the Rook – Wave One
You’ll commence the mission as Case. Right from the start, accompany Marshall and collect essential supplies from the table, including weapons, ammunition, equipment, shields, and more. Once prepared, follow Marshall to the entrance where you’ll find an array of firearms, including Sniper Rifles and Launchers, which will prove useful shortly.
As you exit the front gate, Marshall will prompt you to strategically place some C4 explosives. Be cautious and avoid the three pre-set locations on the rocks.
Once you return inside the compound, the Pantheons will deploy Smoke Grenades in their assault. Resist the urge to detonate the explosives immediately; wait until the shield-carrying foes approach, then trigger the explosives for maximum impact.
With an assortment of weapons and gear at your disposal, use them judiciously to eliminate the enemies. Remember, numerous foes will be attacking from various angles, so stay vigilant.
Eventually, an APC will enter the battlefield. Recall the Launcher you found earlier? Rush back for it and unleash it on the APC. It may require several hits, but this tactic will dispatch it.
This mission segment will shift focus to Separation Anxiety, but we’ll skip that portion as it doesn’t pertain to Checkmate.
Defending the Rook – Wave Two (Detonation)
You’ll now need to protect the rear area of the Rook from an influx of enemies emerging from the jungle. Expect to encounter a few shielded or Elite Pantheons. Maintain your distance and leverage equipment such as the RCXD and Homing Knife for easier eliminations.
After defeating the initial wave, head over to the nearby shed to collect Sentries. Position them strategically on the left and right flanks. This will trigger another wave of enemies that you must eliminate. Once they are defeated, brace for two Juggernauts. Retreat to your starting position from the second wave and engage them from cover.
Upon dispatching the Juggernauts, Woods will notify you that Pantheons have infiltrated the Rook. Follow Marshall to confront the enemies blocking your path while dodging gas grenades that may be lobbed at you. Stay covered until the gas clears.
Finally, return to the front yard to defend against the Pantheon’s third assault.
Assisting Felix with the Bridge Detonation
Felix proposes an explosive strategy to eliminate foot soldiers accessing the Rook via the bridge. Take out the shielded enemies and push forward with Felix to the bridge. Protect him as he plants charges. Following the detonation task, Felix will attempt an escape but gets injured. Your mission now is to cover him and drag him back to safety.
A cutscene will follow, featuring Harrow revealing critical information to Frank about the Pantheons’ intentions.
Preventing Harrow’s Escape (Black Sea)
As events unfold, the Pantheons penetrate the Rook and capture Harrow. Despite Frank’s efforts, he cannot stop them. Now, it’s up to Case to eliminate this threat. Clear out the last wave of enemies as you head toward the Rook. Once inside, assist Marshall in lifting a shelf that is blocking your path. As you both move to the other side, an RPG blast knocks Marshall down, heightening the urgency to prevent Harrow from escaping.
Dash towards the helicopter; navigate past any enemies before you leap up. A soldier will attempt to shoot you from above, so eliminate him quickly. As Harrow attempts to throw you off the helicopter, hit the Jump button to maintain your grip. Utilize the Jump button again to overtake the next soldier.
Now, press the Shoot button to engage Harrow before she can shoot you. When prompted, use the Melee button to strike her. Case will then grab the Cradle and slam it against her head, leading to an explosive gas leak that envelops them in chaos.
In a gripping finale, Case chokes Harrow, effectively concluding the “Checkmate”mission.
