MTG Foundations represents the upcoming significant Standard expansion in Magic: The Gathering, marking the return of numerous Planeswalkers. This particular expansion is intriguing as it is intended to persist through multiple Standard rotations, similar to previous Core Sets. The current outlook suggests that Foundations will be in play until at least 2029. The set is a blend of new cards alongside classic reprints, featuring some remarkable additions.
Although we can’t guarantee the complete list of Planeswalkers set to appear in MTG Foundations, we will provide updates should more be disclosed prior to its launch on November 15, 2024. The next few years are poised to bring excitement to Magic: The Gathering, starting with Foundations and continued by the forthcoming Final Fantasy expansion.
Confirmed Planeswalkers in the MTG Foundations Expansion
The following is a list of Planeswalkers confirmed for the MTG Foundations set. This list is subject to modification as new details emerge over the coming weeks.
1) Ajani, Caller of the Pride
Ajani, Caller of the Pride, a beloved planeswalker in MTG, is making his return in the Foundations set. He’s been a staple since at least 2013 and featured in Starter Commander decks. This Mythic Rare planeswalker, costing just three mana, is ideal for strategies aimed at overwhelming opponents with numerous tokens.
His +1 ability allows you to place a +1/+1 counter on a creature, while the -3 ability grants flying and double strike to a creature until end of turn. However, his ultimate ability, which activates at -8 loyalty, can end the game if your life total is sufficiently high, producing X 2/2 white Cat creature tokens—where X equals your current life total. Incorporating him into a White/Green or Mono-White life gain deck promises an exciting experience.
2) Kaito, Cunning Infiltrator
Kaito, Cunning Infiltrator stands out as he breaks the mold of familiar Planeswalkers like Jace. It’s refreshing to see new faces in MTG Foundations, particularly since Kaito is an alternative to Jace, my least-favorite Planeswalker.
This character possesses a passive ability that grants him a loyalty counter whenever any creature you control inflicts damage on a player. Consequently, he can quickly accumulate loyalty, especially in a blue deck focused on stealthy tactics or air assault.
His +1 ability further expedites this process, allowing a creature you control to avoid blockers, followed by drawing and discarding a card. This dynamic could be compelling in a blue/red deck, especially with future inclusions like Daretti, Rocketeer Engineer, despite his higher mana cost.
Kaito’s -2 generates a 2/1 blue Ninja creature token, with his -9 ability giving him a star spot in your deck. This emblem states, “Whenever a player casts a spell, you create a 2/1 blue Ninja creature token,” adding a layer of strategy that could hinder opponents from casting spells recklessly.
3) Liliana, Dreadhorde General
Liliana’s abilities shine as she returns, highlighted by her -4 loyalty effect, compelling each player to sacrifice two creatures of their choosing, simultaneously allowing you to draw cards—a powerful effect. Her ultimate ability, which activates at -9 loyalty, forces opponents to sacrifice every permanent they control apart from one of each type, drastically altering the game’s landscape.
4) Chandra, Flameshaper
Chandra has undergone a transformation with the introduction of Chandra, Flameshaper in MTG Foundations, offering a well-rounded planeswalker card. She features two + abilities: her +2 provides three red mana while exiling the top three cards of your deck, from which you can play one this turn.
Additionally, her +1 creates a hasty token that is a copy of a target creature you control, sacrificed at the beginning of your end step. This versatility opens the door for creative gameplay strategies, especially in creature-stealing decks.
Moreover, her -4 ability deals damage distributed in any fashion among target creatures or planeswalkers—which can be used immediately given her 6 loyalty—ensuring she counters other planeswalkers effectively.
5) Vivien Reid
The beloved Vivien Reid, from Core Set 2019, is making a comeback in MTG Foundations! She has previously appeared in the Modern Horizons 3 Commander Precon Tricky Terrain. Vivien is vital for any robust Mono-Green deck. Her +1 allows you to examine the top four cards of your library, pulling a land or creature directly into your hand.
Her -3 is also highly practical, enabling the destruction of an artifact, enchantment, or creature with flying, which can be advantageous in crucial moments as you seek to build her loyalty from her starting point of five.
Her impressive -8 grants you an unremovable emblem that boosts all your creatures by +2/+2, giving them vigilance, trample, and indestructibility. This emblem can radically change the dynamics in a green deck, potentially transforming your elves into formidable threats.
