Nick Kyrgios was teased by pickleball player Christian Alshon after he criticized the required skill level for playing the sport, in response to a claim initially made by Alshon.
Alshon, who used to play tennis in college but now plays pickleball, confidently declared that pickleball demands a higher level of skill than tennis, noting its faster reaction time and speed compared to the latter.
“Pickleball has made me a much better athlete than Tennis ever did. Faster reaction time and speed are needed since the ball is only coming from 10 feet away. Point for point, pickleball requires more skill than tennis,”Alshon said.
The statement made by Alshon was not received well by the tennis community, consisting of both players and fans, who responded by inundating his replies with their opposing viewpoint.
Despite being a former World No. 13, Kyrgios also joined in on the speculation and humorously suggested that Alshon had consumed too many tequilas before making the post, calling it a “wild”idea.
“Yeah. Let’s hide under the bed after this statement hahahaha bro get me the best pickleball player and compare his talent to Roger Federer. Wild tweet, wild thought. Delete right now. I love pickle. But you had too many tequilas,”Kyrgios replied.
Christian Alshon responded by stating that there is still much untapped potential in the player pool of pickleball. He argued that it would be premature to compare players from both sports at this point, as pickleball is still in its early stages of development.
Alshon playfully ribbed Nick Kyrgios, joking that he would understand the experience of being a top-10 player if he were to take up pickleball instead of tennis.
“We’ve barely scratched the surface of pickleball’s potential. Imagine if pickleball had more athletes like Federer, Djokovic, and Alcaraz. Then we could compare. Come to pickleball, you might be able to break the top 10,”Alshon shot back.
Nick Kyrgios Recovers from Wrist Injury on Sidelines
In 2022, Nick Kyrgios had an impressive year by reaching his first ever Grand Slam final at Wimbledon.
Regrettably, he did not earn any ranking points for his performance because the ATP had removed the tournament’s points due to SW19’s decision to prohibit Russian and Belarusian tennis players during the Ukraine war.
Despite appearing to be on the rise, the 28-year-old’s progress was halted by a knee injury sustained towards the end of 2022, which kept him out for the majority of 2023. While he was anticipated to return in 2024, a wrist injury occurred at an inopportune time, delaying his comeback even further.
Despite his prolonged absence, Kyrgios has recently reassured fans that his rehab is progressing positively and he may soon return to the court. As a result of his time off, the Australian player is currently unranked on the ATP Tour.
