
Colorful has introduced an innovative feature known as X3D Gaming Mode, which is designed to enhance the performance of Ryzen processors, particularly those from the X3D lineup. This mode strategically disables hyperthreading on Ryzen processors for optimal performance improvements.
Unveiling the X3D Gaming Mode: A Leap Forward for Ryzen CPUs
As the highly anticipated Ryzen 9 9000X3D CPUs prepare for release, Colorful, a key board partner of AMD, has presented its unique technology aimed at maximizing performance for both X3D and non-X3D processors. This cutting-edge feature is primarily tailored for X3D processors but is also applicable to all Ryzen 7000 and 9000 series chips compatible with Colorful’s AM5 motherboards.

Colorful shared a brief demonstration video on Weibo, showcasing how the X3D Gaming Mode operates on its AM5 motherboards, including those equipped with the B650 chipset. Users can enable this feature within the BIOS settings, which subsequently disables Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT) and selectively turns off one CCD (Core Complex Die) depending on whether the processor has one or two CCDs. This configuration allows gaming tasks to be channeled solely through a single CCD.
The benefits for X3D processors are substantial, as the active CCD, which possesses additional L3 cache, can perform significantly better. By turning off the second CCD, the latency is minimized, thus enhancing overall performance. Interestingly, non-X3D processors can also benefit from this mode, as cases exist where disabling hyperthreading can lead to improved performance—though results may vary based on specific scenarios.

For flagship models like the Ryzen 9 9900X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D, the X3D Gaming Mode may provide a more favorable performance enhancement compared to usage on single CCD non-X3D processors. It’s worth noting that disabling one CCD on the Ryzen 9 9900X3D, which features six cores per CCD, might not yield optimal results for all users.
Conversely, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D is expected to perform similarly to the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, known for being one of the fastest gaming processors currently available. This new functionality offered by Colorful is reminiscent of Gigabyte’s X3D Turbo Mode; however, while the latter alters certain CPU parameters without turning off SMT or CCDs, X3D Gaming Mode adopts a different approach.

Both technologies can be accessed via BIOS, allowing users to experiment to determine the best configurations for their specific needs. According to Colorful, enabling the X3D Gaming Mode resulted in a remarkable 17% performance boost in PUBG, a notable improvement for gamers.
