Colin Cowherd warns Patriots against picking ex-Michigan QB at 3rd overall in 2024 NFL Draft: “J.J. McCarthy in New England is a bust”
As the NFL draft approaches, there has been a recent increase in hype surrounding Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy. Despite top prospects such as Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels being the clear favorites in the draft, McCarthy is still considered a strong contender, making this an intriguing event to watch.
However, according to FS1’s Colin Cowherd, despite the abundance of talent in the draft, it would not be a wise decision for the New England Patriots to select McCarthy at No. 3.
During his show “The Herd,”Cowherd stated:
“I think J.J. McCarthy in New England is a bust. I think J.J. McCarthy in Minnesota with that talent and coach, that division, which is light on defense, heavy on scoring, works.”
Despite their efforts, the Patriots have been unsuccessful in finding a suitable replacement for Tom Brady. In light of Mac Jones’ disappointing performance, the team may choose to draft a new quarterback with the third pick, as Jerod Mayo aims to kick off his new regime on a positive note.
It will be intriguing to observe McCarthy’s development if the Patriots do indeed choose him at the top of the draft, as this mock draft predicts.
Could J.J. McCarthy Thrive in the New England Football Environment?
Despite finishing the previous season with the 31st-ranked offense in the NFL and averaging only 13.9 points per game, the Patriots would not set a high standard for success if McCarthy were to join the team in New England.
According to statistics, Demario Douglas proved to be the Patriots’ top receiver during the previous season, recording a total of 561 receiving yards. Despite the struggles of the offense led by Mac Jones, Douglas consistently performed well.
In hiring McCarthy, the Patriots are gaining a proven winner who previously led Michigan to a national championship. He comes from a team that heavily relied on a run-focused offense, and this may be the direction that Mayo and McCarthy choose to take in their inaugural year working together.
J.J. McCarthy has a strong possibility of being drafted in the first round. He has the potential to be selected within the top three picks or as a late first-round pick.
Regardless, it seems clear that Cowherd is not in favor of McCarthy heading to New England. Rather, he believes that the Vikings provide a more favorable destination for the young quarterback to thrive.
