Rising rapper Coi Leray recently sparked controversy after voicing criticisms towards industry manager Billy J, co-founder of the now-defunct 1801 Records, via a series of revealing Instagram posts. Leray announced her intention to go live on the platform to shed light on what she described as Billy J’s attempts to interfere with her life and career, stating:
“Today, I’ll be going live to explain how this guy has been trying to take over my life and ruin my career. There’s nothing in this life I want more than for him to leave me alone. He has done NOTHING for my career.”
She reiterated her frustrations:
“All I want is for him to just leave me alone. For the past five years, he has been trying to take from me, and he has done NOTHING for my career.”
Leray revealed that she had signed with Billy at the age of 21 and claimed that “the lawyer didn’t explain the terms correctly.”She shared:
“I’m feeling so overburdened with these people bothering me, and I won’t drop another track until I’ve fought every bone in my body to ensure that this man leaves me alone. Billy brought back the J, stay tuned for more details.”
While 1801 Records may have signed a number of artists in its prime, including 88-Keys, Journee, and Lonnie Moore, Coi Leray’s fiery posts didn’t stop there; she proceeded to share some screenshots revealing others’ experiences.

Leray promised her followers she would reveal more during her Instagram Live but also conveyed stories from other artists who claimed to have endured similar situations with the label.
One of those artists, Journee, reached out to Coi, recounting that she “signed a deal with them in 2019” which she described as the “worst decision.” Journee commented:
“Billy is incredibly manipulative, girl. I absolutely understand your struggle! I’ve even undergone artist development with EJay! He was instrumental in helping me secure a new manager and lawyer. I just recently managed to exit my contract after years of effort.”
Others in the industry took note of Coi Leray’s posts regarding Billy J, with several reaching out to her to express that “Billy finessed every artist he represented.” One unnamed artist recounted:
“It’s wild because Billy J was trying to coax me into signing with him last year. During our meeting to finalize paperwork, he rushed through it, pushing me to trust the lawyer he provided, but I was smarter than that and read every single word of the contract.”
Though Coi has yet to disclose further details about her accusations against Billy J, the situation has ignited conversations on social media, prompting more artists to come forward with similar grievances. Meanwhile, the record executive has remained silent regarding the claims.
