Windows 11 Requires Admin Access to Open Storage Settings Post KB5074105 Update for Enhanced File Protection

The recent Windows 11 update, KB5074105 (Build 26200.7705), has introduced a significant security enhancement requiring administrator privileges to access Storage settings. Microsoft has clarified to Windows Latest that this alteration is intentional and aims to bolster the security framework of the operating system by preventing unauthorized modifications to system storage settings.

Released on January 29, KB5074105 is classified as an optional update, meaning it will not install automatically. Nevertheless, many users opted to install it as it resolves issues stemming from the black-screen bug affecting Nvidia GPUs, which arose during January 2026’s Patch Tuesday. This update also addresses various concerns related to the Start menu’s functionality.

Notably, users will now encounter a User Account Control (UAC) prompt when attempting to access Storage settings. There’s no need for concern, as this change does not initiate BitLocker or alter drive encryption configurations.

By enforcing this elevation check, Windows ensures that only sessions approved by an administrator can access sensitive system areas and protected files. This measure significantly diminishes the risk posed by unauthorized users, background processes, or malicious actors who might seek to manipulate or delete critical data.

“To help ensure that only authorized Windows users can access system files, Windows now displays a User Account Control (UAC) prompt when you open Storage settings (Settings > System > Storage), ”Microsoft noted in an update to the support document.

In addition to this security measure, users will also notice a newly added Device Card feature on the Windows settings homepage, providing quick insights into current CPU usage, available RAM, and free storage space.

Exploring Additional Changes in Windows 11

In the latest iteration of Windows 11 Build 26200.7705 and beyond, several other noteworthy features have emerged, particularly the Cross Device Resume capability designed for a seamless experience with Android apps.

This innovative feature allows users to pause a song on Spotify while using their mobile device, then seamlessly resume playback on their Windows desktop through the taskbar. Users can also continue editing documents from Microsoft 365 across devices, although it’s important to note that this functionality is limited to specific smartphone brands including Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Honor. Unfortunately, iPhone users will not benefit from this feature due to restrictions imposed by Apple.

Additionally, Microsoft has made it easier for users to toggle the Smart App Control (SAC) feature without needing a clean installation of Windows 11. You can access this option via the Windows Security App > App & Browser Control > Smart App Control. However, there remains some uncertainty over whether a clean installation is still necessary for this build to enable the Smart App Control feature effectively.
