Windows 11: Microsoft Phases Out 3D Viewer Following Paint 3D, Signaling the End of the Creators Update Era

In a significant move, Microsoft has announced plans to phase out 3D Viewer from Windows 11, concluding the era of the “Windows 10 Creators Update.”This decision follows the recent removal of Paint 3D, indicating a pivot in Microsoft’s strategy towards 3D and mixed-reality applications.

According to an update to their support documentation, Microsoft confirmed that 3D Viewer will be removed from the Microsoft Store effective July 1, 2026. Users will no longer have the option to download or install the application, although it will remain functional for those who already have it installed for the immediate future.

“3D Viewer is deprecated and will be removed from the Microsoft Store on July 1, 2026, ” Microsoft explicitly stated in its announcement.

While Microsoft recommends transitioning to third-party 3D software for 3D art viewing, the question remains: will users still be able to utilize 3D Viewer?

Our testing at Windows Latest suggests that 3D Viewer continues to operate on Windows 11 for now. However, a similar fate might await it as occurred with Windows Maps, which ceased functionality following Microsoft’s announcement of its retirement.

The Legacy of Microsoft’s 3D Initiatives

This is not the first instance of Microsoft retracting products that were once championed. In previous years, the company positioned Windows 10 as a platform for creators, launching major updates dubbed the “Creators Update”and “Fall Creators Update.”These updates introduced tools such as Paint 3D, 3D Viewer, and Remix3D, aiming to integrate 3D capabilities deeply into the Windows experience.

Despite these ambitious plans, the backlash from users ultimately compelled Microsoft to reassess its approach. Specifically, the push to replace the classic MS Paint with Paint 3D faced considerable dissent, leading Microsoft to reverse this decision post-criticism.

With the latest developments in 2024, Microsoft is now removing Paint 3D entirely, reinforcing its pattern of promoting certain products before pivoting away from them.

Although I am not a 3D artist myself and do not advocate for excess clutter within Windows 11, it is evident that Microsoft’s methodology reflects a troubling trend. The company often appears to select a favored product, endeavors to embed it throughout its ecosystem, then retreats or abandon such initiatives within a relatively short timeframe.

Deprecation of Legacy Printer Drivers

In conjunction with phasing out 3D Viewer, Microsoft is also deprecating legacy printer drivers. While this change will not predominantly impact most consumers, it is still noteworthy in the context of Microsoft’s ongoing operational changes.

According to an updated roadmap, Windows 11 will no longer support V3 and V4 printer drivers following the January 2026 optional update (KB5074105).Users with older printers that rely on these drivers may face connectivity issues and will need either to upgrade their hardware or seek assistance from the manufacturer.

In recent years, Microsoft has discontinued support for various applications and features, including WordPad, Legacy DRM services, Suggested Actions, and Cortana, among others, shedding light on its shifting focus away from older technologies.
