This week, Verizon has demonstrated its impressive data throughput capabilities, particularly during Super Bowl LX held on Sunday in San Francisco. The telecom giant reported a remarkable median download speed of 2.16 Gbps at peak times, showcasing the strength of its network.
Network Development and Super Bowl Data Throughput
According to a recent announcement from Verizon, the exceptional data performance experienced during the Super Bowl was a culmination of “nearly 200 individual network projects across the Bay Area.”Here are some highlights of their data usage statistics from the event:
- Verizon customers in the vicinity of Levi’s Stadium consumed a total of 40.32 TB of data, reflecting a 6% increase from the previous year.
- An estimated 60% of the stadium’s capacity, which stands at 70, 823 attendees, were utilizing the Verizon network.
- Across San Francisco, Verizon users collectively downloaded 39.788 TB of data during the game.
- During pivotal moments like kickoff and the halftime show, Verizon achieved median download speeds of 2.16 Gbps and median upload speeds of 461 Mbps.
It’s important to note that Verizon serves as the official 5G network for the NFL. The company attributes its successful throughput during the Super Bowl to extensive planning and execution over the years.
However, it’s possible that Verizon’s enthusiastic promotion of its impressive data speeds is a strategic move to bolster confidence in its network reliability. This follows a significant outage in January that caused major disruptions, during which the carrier offered affected users a $20 credit as a goodwill gesture.
For context, this credit was four times greater than what AT&T provided to its customers during a similar outage in February 2024, reflecting Verizon’s commitment to customer service in the wake of network challenges.
