What’s Next for StarCraft?

Last month, Blizzard Entertainment revealed plans for four showcase events to update fans on their major franchises. While players eagerly awaited news on games like World of Warcraft and Overwatch, many noticed the notable absence of StarCraft from the announcement.

This omission comes as no surprise, given the lack of a new installment in the StarCraft series for several years. In April 2025, Nexon was confirmed to be developing the next game within this esteemed franchise. However, the future direction of StarCraft under Nexon remains somewhat unclear. While it’s historically associated with the real-time strategy (RTS) genre—which remains popular in Korea, Nexon’s home country—there is speculation regarding a possible change in focus.

Recently, a report from Windows Central hinted that a StarCraft-based third-person shooter could be slated for a reveal at BlizzCon 2026. The report did not specify which company would be handling the development, though assumptions lean towards Blizzard.

Adding to the intrigue, The Korea Economic Daily (spotted on Reddit) has further fueled speculation about Nexon’s project, suggesting that it aligns with the rumored third-person shooter. This development indicates a shift from the traditional RTS gameplay associated with StarCraft.

It’s essential to approach these rumors cautiously, particularly as Blizzard has yet to confirm the development of a new StarCraft title. Nonetheless, Blizzard has teased that this year’s BlizzCon promises to be “one for the ages.”Additionally, a 2024 report from journalist Jason Schreier hinted at Blizzard also developing its own StarCraft shooter.

If these reports hold true, it may lead to a scenario where both Nexon and Blizzard are simultaneously working on shooter titles within the StarCraft universe, while a new RTS entry remains uncertain. As fans await further developments, BlizzCon 2026, taking place from September 12-13, 2026, might finally provide clarity on the future of StarCraft.
